Optional Matchmaking / LFG: How to Implement

Additional Matchmaking Options; it’s on the wish list. Now that it is, let’s push them to get it ‘right.’ Here’s my take: Optional Matchmaking & In-game LFG Defined:
First things first: I feel it necessary to define a couple things: Optional Matchmaking: this means players would have the ability to choose to add their guardian to a public lobby (and be paired accordingly) OR remain in a private lobby where their fireteam will remain autonomous, as with the existing system. Essentially, matchmaking would have an on / off switch. In-game LFG: the ability to access an LFG service in-game. In case you're new to the term LFG (Look(ing) For Group), it is a means by which you can post your Guardian's information for others to see, along with a specific activity you're looking to accomplish. This should look something like DestinyLFG.com, but be intuitively designed for console use.
Here is how I would like to see activities split up: Optional Matchmaking: Story Missions Vanguard Strikes Daily Weekly Nightfall Prison of Elders 28, 32 In-game LFG Service: Raids Prison of Elders 34, 35 Trials of Osiris Reasoning for the split:
As someone who has played this game with matchmaking, friends and LFG, I [assume to] know that matchmaking and LFG are and are not the right fit for activities. Matchmaking: Matchmaking doesn’t allow for a designated fire-team leader, allows players to port in to existing activities in progress and cheese rewards, presents AFK’ers, trolls (those who run over randoms with sparrows or drop bubble of rockets, things like that), and on and on. The downside(s) of optional matchmaking (OMM) are few and rarely encountered and certainly do not out way the convenience of having such an option. I believe that OMM is suitable for most three person PvE activities. I do not believe matchmaking is suitable for six person activities like raids, or in the Prision of Elders (34, 35) or in Trials of Osiris, hence a request for LFG. LFG Service: Regarding the LFG service and the listed activities: anyone that has spent time in a raid or the House of Wolves Endgame (Prison of Elders and Trials) knows that communication is paramount, as with weapon selection and class selection. Sometimes you need a Warlock, Icebreaker, someone with a Mic., experienced relic wielder, something more than a random luck-of-the-draw. These are activities which also need a host, someone that can boot players that are trolling, people that go AFK or just need to be able designate a teamleader that has a save or promote a relic holders (for the glitchy raids). All reasons for an in-game LFG service over OMM. Crucible / Iron Banner: You’ll notice that Crucible and Iron Banner are left off. I did that intentionally as I believe these are activities that demand ‘forced matchmaking,’ which isn’t to say that they couldn’t benefit from having ‘private matches’ as people have been requesting, but that is an argument to be made in a different post.
Implementation:
Optional Matchmaking – Tie it in with fire-team settings (Public for matchmaking and Friends only, Invite Only or Private for a private lobby), which activates at the destination pane or add the activities to the strike list and leave the destination pane for private lobbies. Meaning: the activities listed on the left of the screen on the Destination pane would be private, whereas the same list in the Strike Playlist would be matchmaking. Any ideas are welcome (I am seeking input from better minds than mine). In-game LFG – add to service terminals throughout the Tower and Reef. Again, something intuitive. Perhaps create a dashboard in the destination pane. (Again, I welcome input).
Okay, I’ve said my piece, if you stuck with it, thank you (it was rather wordy). Please provide feedback so I can hone the argument and that we may get the results we want, rather than a software engineer’s half-hearted gesture (everyone knows Bungie is opposed to this, so it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibilities that they saddle us with something that we don’t want – see the Weekly Heroic as an example). Comment, Bump, Like – it’s how Bungie notices these things. Special Thanks:
Sub Umbra Floreo MinistrOfJustiz Shadow4wolf Lost Sols XcEvilGenius LightDance https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/127334775/0/0/1 And anyone else who’s supported this post
History of this post:
Now that ‘Additional matchmaking options’ has been added to the wish list, a transition must be made. This post has been going since February and has taken on a few different forms. Initially this was a kneejerk reaction to added matchmaking to the Weekly Heroic (which I hated). It has since transitioned into a post asking to make all matchmaking optional and available to the rest of the endgame. So, now that Bungie put it on the wish list, I’d like to add my two-cents on how I would like to see it implemented and the different forms it should take.
