Bree couldn’t be sure what time in the universe it was by the time she had made her way back to their resting spot. Bree was back in her armor, and even though she had felt like she had just awoken from a sleep that lasted a decade, she still felt weary and drained. The Vandals were stirring back into the land of the living when Bree walked up. How long she had been gone, Bree, couldn’t say, but she was ready to press on. Her Fatebringer was tucked into its holster on her right leg, she now held a crude looking auto rifle in her hands that she had tucked away for a rainy day. It was primitive compared to some of the newer weapons, but it fit in her hands like an old glove. The barrel was customized with a muzzle booster, increasing the weapon’s reliability, and improved the rate of fire, a hair trigger, and pre-Golden Age iron sights. It was scuffed and beaten, the grips were worn and it was painted all black. The butt of the rifle a bright red, hand painted on the chamber in bright green were the words, “Send It.” Bree held it firmly as she checked her ammunition, she also had a fusion rifle on her back. It was best to have and not need, then to not have and need. Once they were ready, the fireteam of five formed up and headed out. Bree had the diagram of the cave network on her HUD. The complexity and the enormity of the vast system were dizzying, without the help from Flower, they would be in serious trouble. Twisting and turning, squeezing through tight spaces, ducking, crawling, and climbing, they marched on like a colony of ants on a hill. They stomped through the broken stones single file, Bree could only hope that her navigation system was a lot more accurate than when she found that cave where Mar was, but what choice did she have? They had to keep moving forward. After what felt like forever, they came to a dead end. It was just a slab of smooth stone with no way around, over or through it. The map on Bree’s HUD showed that it wasn’t even there and that the path continued straight onward. She was just about to give up and turn back when her eye caught something glowing ever so faintly in a crevice just above the wall. “You two, come over here,” Bree said into her helmet. “Flower, translate that into whatever dialect they understand, tell them I need a boost.” She looked up at the flickering little light that was just out of her arm’s reach. Almost instantly, the two Vandals she pointed to came over to her, one stood on her right while the other stood on her left. As if they were two pieces of jungle gym equipment, Bree placed her hands on their shoulders’ and climbed up the Vandals like a ladder. She reached up and her fingers wrapped around the little light, then, she gently pulled. The object slid out with a little force, and she climbed back down the Vandals to inspect it. Specks of light danced across her helmet as she flipped it over, looking at it from all angles; it was a pure white, tiny crystal. “Flower, can you get me--” Bree was cut-off by a rumbling sensation under her feet. The Vandals look around at each other, Bree, instinctively took a step back from the wall, the crystal still in hand. Like a scene from a bad Indiana Jones movie, the rock slab grumbled and shook before it slowly retracted up, vanishing into the dark above. The group walked through the doorway and continued, whatever light was in the tunnels, now quickly began to dissipate into nothing but black. Bree tried to activate her flashlight, it flicked on and then just as fast flicked off. She struggled with it, the light flashed and blinked, showing choppy scenes of rock and boulders, then, it finally clicked off completely. Slowly, the ragtag team pressed on, being mindful not to go too fast for fear of tripping or falling into some unknown hole that lurked in the dark, just waiting to swallow them. That’s when Bree saw it. It was a large platform off in the distance and it was brightly lit with a light that shone down from an unknown source. Apprehensively, Bree led the team through the pitch black until they reached the bottom of a stone staircase. Step by step, they moved up the stairs only to come onto a large sync pad, just like the one in the previous Trial, they all gathered around it, not daring to step on it just yet. “Flower, I need you to pull up the schematics for…” she had forgotten the name of the Trial they were currently on. “Whatever Trial this is, is it Shadows? No, Timeless? Flower, what is it?” Bree’s frustration at her own amnesia was evident in her voice. “This is the Trial of Corruption, Bree, and sadly, I have no walkthrough on this Trial. It’s different than all of the rest, there are no Vex transportation clouds evident, nor will there be. It’s a different kind of enemy we face here…” “What kind of enemy?” “Do you remember what Mar had said? Many have entered these Trials, none have left. There is a synergy here that has combined for an unholy purpose, to destroy and consume anything with Light...us,” Flower said. “What hasn’t been trying to kill us? That’s all we have done, face death at every turn, I wouldn’t expect anything less. Stop talking in cryptic sentences and just tell me, what kind of enemy do we face here?” There was a long pause, Bree, inspected the platform. It had an ample amount of cover, broken chunks of wall surrounded the platform, some big and some small, but it was something to hide behind. And to have something to hide behind when the shooting started was more valuable than any treasure. “Flower! What of the enemy?” “They are...um….those that didn’t make it out. Guardians, Bree, the enemy we are about to face, are fallen Guardians…” [i]Thank you all again for your continued support. All comments, feedback, and criticisms are more than welcome!
