Sword of a God

I stretched my arms, sighing in relief after transmatting down from my cramped ship. A small vessel but it gets around alright. I trailed my gaze around the cracked gray surface of the moon scanning for a Hive Fortress. We had just received a message from Rahool, the Cryptarch, about an ancient Hive relic resurfacing somewhere inside. At my side stood my companion, a warlock, who was studying a book on the Hive and their structure. I had first met her in the tower after which our many pursuits beyond the walls of the city led us to an unusual yet mutually beneficial pact. We trudged along the barren landscape of the shattered moon until we came to the supposed area where the Fortress would be located. Surely enough, after a hike over a small hill my eyes met the the large structure, a giant twisted castle with obvious Hive origins. Beside it lay a massive, gaping hole leading down into the Hellmouth. Who knows what unseen horrors were lurking in the dark below. Jumping straight down would be suicide of course so we went through the Fortress instead. We walked towards its massive entrance which held no doors to seal it while the warlock filled me in on Hive history. As we neared the entrance, the familiar screech of thralls and wizards echoed from within, their disgusting scent filling the air. My companion shuddered at the sound. She was never comfortable around those putrid husks, preferring to avoid combat with their kind. Said they creeped her out. Whispered things. I never noticed, too busy tearing them apart to care. This mission was important however. The relic we were tasked with locating was a Sword that was once held by the Hive God, Crota, during his conquest of the moon. A Hive being of unspeakable power and the wielder of the darkest edge, from which no light could escape. He used it to slaughter thousands of Guardians, an event that could only be called a complete disaster. The largest army of Guardians ever assembled, utterly crushed in a matter of days. Crota's no longer around but apparently his sword still is. Our job is to find this Sword and destroy it, ensuring it is never used again. We began our descent into the Fortress, guns at the ready. Its tunnels went on for what seemed like miles. The Hive had really done a number on the moon. It was like a planetary wasp nest which stretched from its surface, all around it and all the way into the core. The moon used to be a symbol of hope, but now it stands only as a looming symbol of defeat and despair. The blade would be buried somewhere deep in the Hellmouth and guarded by some of the Hive's fiercest. Namely the Swarm princes, the sword's creators. It was their will that forged the renderer of light, the darkest edge. As we went deeper we eventually ran into the Hive, their thralls hidden in dark corners, the acolytes knelt in prayer and a single solitary wizard hovering with its head bowed in supplication. I studied the chamber ensuring that were no more than we could handle. The Hive, after all, group in large numbers and attack in swarms. Being outnumbered is nothing new but a smart woman picks her battles carefully. After a small scan around the room my ghost alerted me that it was indeed only this many present. Perfect. Having the element of surprise, me and my companion burst out of hiding and dove straight towards the hive, guns pointed firmly at the targets and fingers ready to click. Boom. We rained lead upon them, quickly taking down the acolytes before they had a chance to retaliate. The thralls sprang out from the shadows attempting to rush us down. Of course, we were expecting them and a couple of my companion's void grenades made short work of them. All that was left was the wizard who loomed above us, dancing through the air and avoiding our shots. Damn wizards. The most annoying of the Hive. She hid behind a pillar and began chanting and waving her arms. A black mist began to form, weighing down on us like tar in the air. The mist was poisonous meaning we needed to get out quick. Our movement was bogged down and the life was quickly draining from us. I'd fought many of them before and I wasn't about to be done in just yet. In one swift motion, I tapped into the light, summoning a blade of pure arc energy and zipped out of the mist, lunging towards the wizard. She tried to move away but I was too fast. With a single strike of my blade, the wizard was no more. A snap of annihilating current disintegrated her where she stood. I landed lightly and the blade trance ended. Behind me the mist began to dissipate freeing my companion. She walked out of the fading mist towards me with a grin on her face. "Little too excessive don't you think?" "Blade dancing is a fine art, beautiful and lethal. Plus its fun." She chuckled, "Show off." We continued on until we reached a large chamber with a massive chain going through the center. Anchors that supported the structures of the Hive. Behind it, at the other end of the room, floating ominously was the sword. It glowed faintly with a bright green colour. I could sense the dark energy emanating from it. That thing had to go. The warlock told me to pick it up, as it would lure out the swarm princes. We needed to kill them. It was the only way we could destroy the sword. I walked towards it, wary of its pulsating dark. "Careful, its power is dark. It drains whatever light it touches." the warlock called out to me. "I can tell. Do I just grab it by the hilt? Won't it kill me?" "I don't know. Better than grabbing it by the blade I suppose. Probably won't kill you." "That's encouraging." I sighed. I reached out towards the blade, carefully grabbing it by its hilt. My hands connected and I pulled it from its altar. Good. I didn't die. "Hey! I'm ok!" "Yeah, looks like it. Be careful though, I can hear the swarm princes...They're coming." "Hear what? I don't hear anyth-" There was loud screech followed by all the doors in the chamber opening. Thralls poured out in droves running towards me. "Oh shi-" "I'll provide supporting fire!" The warlock shouted as she ran behind cover. Great. Good thing I know how to handle blades. Let the slaughter begin. Thanks for reading! Critique is appreciated. And don't forget to like and bump. I wrote this cause I like the Sword of Crota mission. Also cause I need practice.
