Countering Destiny's weapons

Having a tough time in Crucible? Thorn users got you down? Keep getting gunned down by Red Death? Well here's some tips that may help you succeed against the weapons that plague you. *keep in mind that these strategies won't always work. In a game where you can be killed out of nowhere by just about anything even the most well thought out planning can fail you.* Also, I'm nowhere near the greatest PvP player around (mid level at best) so take this advice with a grain of salt. On to it then... Hand Cannons Simplest advice, don't let them shoot first (this is also the case with most weapon types). Hand cannons are powerful. Most are 3HKOs to the head and have a low TTK. Players that are good with hand cannons can crack off headshots one after another. Players that aren't use Thorn (haha jk). If you run into a particularly annoying hand cannon user your best bet is to flank them and guarantee you get a few rounds in before they turn your way or attack when they're distracted by a teammate. 1 on 1 gunfights against them are going to be tough. Remember to strafe. Most hand cannons have a low to mid RoF, headshots are extremely important. Don't make it easy on them by standing still or running straight at them. Not letting them draw first blood is all the more important when dealing with exotic hand cannon users. Auto Rifles Since the nerf, auto rifles are a bit easier to deal with. But don't let yourself think "oh auto rifles are trash now I don't have to worry about them at all." That kind of thinking will get you killed. Yes they got a nerf, but they still perform well in capable hands. When faced with a player adept in their use, strafing is extremely important. Autos having the first shot is not as detrimental as a hand cannon, but its still less than ideal. Even when they do shoot first, quick strafing will make it difficult for them to land headshots on you and dramatically increase your chances of survival. This from PR3DATOR XVI
For ARs if you're using a precision weapon then pop shot. That is leave cover fire 1-2 quick then back in cover and repeat. This sets up a shot trade taking away the full auto advantage and getting you an easy kill since precision weapons have higher damage per shot. Also works anytime you have the impact advantage or they have the RoF advantage so long as they don't have both.
This seems to be a good strategy for many situations against many different weapon types. Snipers This one is pretty easy. Stay out of long range sight lines. Most maps are geared more toward CQC but good sniper rifle users know where the best choke points are and the perfect places to snipe from to keep you from making it out unscathed. Don't get vengeful. Being repeatedly killed by a sniper (besides it being your fault for continuing to go the same route) can be frustrating. But don't try to cross the map seeking revenge. Most of the time you won't make it there and anger makes you sloppy (which is half the reason people t-bag). Scout rifles are great counter sniping weapons and if you can handle a sniper rifle yourself, that's even better. Scouts with high caliber rounds are ideal as they make your enemy's cursor bounce around and make it difficult for them to 1 shot you. Pulse Rifles Basically the same strategy as going up against auto rifles. Strafe. Strafe. Strafe. Pulse rifle effectiveness relies on landing full bursts. Don't give them the opportunity. Fusion Rifles Now these are a pain in the ass. But if you're playing the game at a decent volume you should be able to hear the charge. Your best bet is to keep moving until the shot has been fired. Most fusion rifle users are easily killed between charges. As long as the first shot misses or doesn't hit enough of its burst to kill you should have plenty of time to gun them down before they can charge their next shot. Obviously faster charge rates are more difficult to deal with (Plan C for example) and Pocket Infinity is just an asshole. But again, you can hear the charge. Duck behind cover and make sure you aren't standing out in the open like an idiot when they go off. Shotguns Being repeatedly killed by shotguns is awesome, isn't it? It's one of my favorite things in the game (sarcasm). But they can be easily countered. I know a lot of people say "Don't tell me to stay away. All maps are close quarters." While this is true for maps like Anomaly and Firebase Delphi where the fighting is contained mainly around zone B (if playing control), most maps actually have plenty of mid range sight lines and a few long range ones. Dealing with shotguns only requires you to be out of their range, or using a shotgun yourself. Fusion rifles are also effective but if you're up against a blink shotgunner or someone who's listening for the charge you might not be able to place your shots well enough to prevent them from closing on you. Keep your distance, and don't fall victim to the "it's impossible to stay distanced" mindset. That kind of thinking is why shotguns rule PvP in the first place. Scout Rifles Deadly at mid to long range, garbage up close. I'm an avid scout rifle user and I can tell you from experience, close range is your best friend when dealing with a scout rifle user. Keep out of the long sight lines and use cover to close the gap between you and your opponent. Shotguns, fusion rifles, autos, and pulse rifles are all more effective at close range than scouts. A 1 on 1 fight against a scout rifle at close range will almost always end with you on top. If you see me on the enemy team in a match then by all means, keep your distance ;). But close on every other scout. Rocket Launchers We all know when heavy spawns. Lord Shaxx announces that shit 10 seconds before it drops. You have a few options here. A. Grab heavy and attempt to take out the enemy team while they're busy grabbing theirs (risky but rewarding if successful) B. Stand close enough to heavy for it to drop, but don't grab it just yet. Wait it out until the opposing team has expended all of their ammo and then pick up yours. (Gives you the advantage of having rockets or MG ammo while everyone else is using their standard weapons) C. Grab heavy immediately and hope your shots are more well placed than theirs. (Also a bit risky but if done successfully you potentially prevent a lot of your teammate's deaths). If you find yourself up against a player who went with option B you need to use the environment to your advantage. Many player use tracking rockets which are easily dodged provided you see them coming. Simply duck around a corner or behind an obstacle and the rocket will be rendered useless. If they aren't using tracking, clearing the blast radius is obviously your best move. Corners and obstacles still work but without tracking most players will fire at the wall behind you or the ground next to your cover. Don't stop moving. Heavy MGs These are difficult to handle. 1 on 1 gunfights almost never go your way unless you're using a heavy yourself and even then it's 50/50. No amount of strafing is gonna save you here. They're just too powerful. They're 10 kill streak machines. That being said a good sniper or scout rifle user can put them down if they're decent at what they do. Many players choose high impact/low RoF MGs (Jolder's/Thunderlord) with high stability perks but they usually don't have great range. Flank, remain distanced, or catch them firing at someone else. Don't try to rush them, especially head-on. Edit: TLW works well against MGs. Its a brutal hand cannon. To ensure your greatest chance of survival you still don't want to go at them head on though. If you do you might win, but you might not. You may notice I didn't go into countering with grenades, supers, special abilities and such. This is purely about gunplay. If you want advice about how to effectively use a Titan against specific weapons and skills I can do that (although that's for a different post). Warlocks and Hunters will have to look elsewhere for tips on that front. Again, these tips won't always work. In Destiny the most random events can lead to your death in the most unexpected ways. But hopefully this will help some people who are struggling in the Crucible do a bit better and have a bit more fun with the game we all hate to love and love to hate. If you don't agree with these strategies (which I'm sure many won't) or have better advice, feel free to post your own. Just try and be constructive about it. I'd rather this not turn into a shitshow of people bickering about which class has the most noob-worthy skills or which guns make you the biggest scrublord. This is meant to be helpful, nothing more.
