When destiny was released they promised loads of customization. When one reaches level 20 this is not the case. You are forced to wear armor that increases your light level. Sometimes that armor doesn't exactly look as awesome as it could, or it doesn't fit with the rest of your current armor. I think vanity item slots would benefit everyone. You could equip your favorite armor without having to lose your light levels for the sake of fashion or, or the intimidation factor. Take for instance the Don't Touch Me armor for the hunter. While you may like the abilities in them, their excessive amount of blue (with or without a shader) might not look good if your going for a camouflage look. I believe vanity slots would benefit all guardians if indeed they were added.
