[Story] The Mystery of Xur (Prologue Complete)

I like the Grimoire cards and find them to be an interesting addition, even if the plot to Destiny is a little thin, so I decided to expand on their fiction by writing my own. Enjoy! The Darkness They came for us in the night, claws like black glass, and every scream a reminder of the hell from which they came. It was the first time that I had encountered them, and all the tales had not prepared me. Unlike the others out there – the Vex who operate with their seemingly cold, mindless intellect; the Cabal with their war-focussed mindset, and the Fallen who steal or break everything they lay their many eyes on – the Hive actually see you. Oh, I know what you’re thinking. You’ve been shot at by the Fallen and the Vex and Cabal, they can obviously see you as well. And you’re right. But it’s the Hive who actually see you – your light. They are drawn to it. They feed off it. Compared to the Hive the other three are simply obstructive: walls placed in the way of our revived expansion. But the Hive… they, they have the power to end us, and to end the Traveler. And you see that as they rush you, claws slashing, jaws snapping. So I fired, and I never stopped. The warlock was the first to react, she was the most experienced of us all. Her first trail blazed by the void. She killed six with her first strike, a grenade eviscerated another two, and by the time we began firing, her gold-plated hand cannon sent a roaring knight back to the dark below. The two hunters danced with their blades, matching the ferocity of the thrall, weaving light-infused steel death with seemingly endless waves. Myself, one of the three titans along for the ride, began with the steady drumbeat of precision fire. Each shell a gift to the mind of an eager Hive wretch. The other titans followed suit, the staccato of the gunsmiths creations echoed in the grand hall – an ancient monument to mankind’s vision. But as we ploughed our way through the swarm another darkness descended, a sword-bearer not seen since Crota’s fall only months before, in a raid led by a team of relatively unknown guardians. But that was on the Moon, at its cold and ancient heart. Here, though, on Earth, a Hive sword-bearer, with Crota’s mark, met our challenge – head on. We fired, the horde fell, but this one strode on. One of the hunters, a male awoken called T’saltis, with piercing blue eyes, took to the golden giant with blades and bullets, a shimmer of steel and then heavy machine gun fire. But the sword-bearer charged the fusillade and cleaved T’saltis in two. His fellow hunter, a female, screamed and threw all she had at the beast. And for a moment it staggered. She followed up every attack with curses rarely heard between bond partners. But she cared little. Her bond partner had been taken from her. The giant pressed on, even as we fired, pushing her back with wide, arcing slashes until she fell, with almost tragic irony, from the cliff edge. Her fall was silent, dignified, noble – one last act of defiance. As titans we pressed the creature in kind, forcing it back as it had forced Malera, but it stood firm on the edge, defying our weapons. And at last they ran dry, our ammunition spent. The warlock stepped forward and leapt with ancient knowledge and power glowing from within, a purple hue of fiery intent. Each attack spared nothing, and the creature was forced to one knee, its power waning. And then it struck out, and she fell – our most experienced and powerful guardian lost to the darkness...

Grenades were thrown and we titans charged into the fray. Fist of Havoc followed Fist of Havoc, but in the end only I remained. The sword hung, mid-air, revolving slowly like an artificers’ museum display. I seized it, admiring its strength while fearing its deadly origins. And as I looked upon the weapon with mixed emotions, the familiar cry of the swarm sounded from the mouth of a nearby cave. Those claws of black glass had returned. I turned to meet them, sword in hand, and readied myself for the coming slaughter. And revenge. (Prologue end. Main story soon)
