Supers: An imbalance and crutch to balance skill level?

Supers in Destiny are used in PvP to balance skill level. If we rank players skill in a one to ten fashion then we can look at it in the following way. If a player on team A has a skill rank of 8 and a player on team B has a rank of 2, then the team A player has the advantage. However the difference in equipment between the two adds or subtracts a number from the skill rank in comparison to two players. Say the team A player has a legendary handcannon and team B player has a fully upped hawkmoon, the different in the equipment adds a couple of levels to the players base skill compared to that one player on team A. Supers cause this same effect but it is more relatable to that of heavy ammo. The question I am looking to discuss here is the following. Do supers give to much of an advantage? My opinion: They do give too much advantage to players in situations. This causes a more suicidal play style which should not be promoted. I feel that supers need nerfed across the board. Edit: See the problem with asking this sort of thing is people never try to give a yes or no type of opinion. The question was asked and people come here posting things harassing others, complaining that supers are supposed to be super, and that everyone has a super. I get those are your opinions, but they are grossly misleading to what was actually said. What was said? Should supers be taken down a notch? You act as if they are going to take your supers away all together. The forums should be a place of discussion, not hate. Also I could give little to no -blam!-s to what is being said. xD

  • Supers should've never been in PvP. The idea that someone can essentially AFK and still get 1-2 supers per match is retarded. Especially in the case of Hunters, supers reward terrible players with free multiple kills.

  • I have 2 solutions either. A. Remove supers from PVP B. Just remove pvp from the game and add it as a second downloadable disc that comes with the game. This way stuff can get nerfed in PVP but not PvE.

    • The supers aren't overpowered in my opinion. I don't think they need a nerf at all. They basically add another dimension to the game, and because they're set on a timer, with cool down it isn't something you have to worry about all too often. It leads to move and counter move. If i see a blade dancer, how can i counter that? if a titan put up a bubble, how can i counter that? if a warlock used radiance, how can i counter that? I can either use my super (if i have one) and offset theirs, or know that they no longer have theirs, try to counter it another way and then use mine once theirs is out for greater effect. plus it makes me feel like a badass when i get 5 kills with my golden gun, generate a bunch of orbs so my teammates can use their super, and then rotate from there.

    • I mean variety kind of inherently leads to imbalance.

    • You shouldn't post anything of quality on these boards, the people that inhabit this forum could not for one moment consider a truth that isn't their own.

    • This again... Supers do not balance skill. They reward skill. You earn Super energy for every kill prior to the Super charging. That means the most killy players are going to fire off Supers more often, baring orb pick ups, but that too is being rewarded for team work. If the more killy player executes Supers more often they will get more kills, and drop more orbs for their team. Supers are a resource like anything else. If managed properly it makes a major influence on the game. How does this encourage a more aggressive playstyle? By being more aggressive you are seeking risk for the rewards. If you are a Shotgun Sally and are successful, more Super energy. If you are a Shotgun Sally and not successful, then enemy gets more Super energy. The common thread here is that Super energy for kills encourages performance.

    • I completely agree. Supers are OP. They should be nerfed. They cause too many deaths in pvp. Wait a minute, melee is OP too. Melee causes too many deaths. So do grenades. And guns. Bungie should nerf everything. Wait no. People would still get killed. They should remove dying. Then we'd see who the really skilled people are.

        • Definitely a crutch to balance skill level but I think a more skilled player will use them better than an unskilled player

Smite has an "ultimate" ability. Dragon Ball Z Fighting games have a ultimate attack as well. Runescape even has a "super" when played in EoC mode.
aka supers in a pvp environment is something that is common and you should get use to them.
• But the thing is that the more skilled player will be killing the lesser skilled player more often outside of supers. This gives the more skilled player more supers than the lesser skilled person. Therefore, the player with the most skill will still come out on top. Supers merely add a different dynamic to the typical FPS gameplay.

            • You only feel "OMG I'm constantly getting hit by supers" when you or your teammates are actively feeding kills to the other team. Or someone on the other team is so good that he/she is charging his super so fast and dropping bunch of orbs all the time for his team. I never feel the wraith of super when the average KD of the other team is below 1.0. Super is only OP and imbalanced when someone is having a good game or someone is actively feeding kills. What am I trying to say? Super is not a crutch for the unskilled. It should be nerfed so the skilled won't be so overpowered and the unskilled won't feel so helpless.

You realize supers are supposed to be powerful, right? It's not like Bungie said 'an insta-kill with three shots? Oh well, I hope players don't figure out how to use this.' The whole idea of a super is to get free kills and narrow skill gap. That said, they aren't a crutch (it will take a bad player maybe 3-4 minutes to get one) and they don't need a nerf. Edit: Also, I'm not sure how it motivates suicidal play. But assuming it did, I don't see why that's a bad thing.

                • Yes let's nerf the Titan bubble it kills too many. So suicidal. But also all others don't need to be nerfed. You get supers 2-3 times a round Max it's nbd

                  • Supers are fine they way they are because of the type of gameplay they promote. The means of getting a super involves you increasing your score by all means possible, whether its kills or objectives. Using your super helps other people get theirs, etc. I can say that since it is based this way, even if the lesser team has access to supers, they are grossly overpowered thanks to the winning team getting more score.. I wouldn't say its too much of a problem but it can get pretty bad sometimes.

                      • A PVP game mode where everyone gets 2 supers, period. Use them at the beginning of the game, they don't recharge. Use them later, they still don't recharge.

                        • I see what you're trying to say but I completely disagree with you. There are 3 Classes. 6 different supers. Everyone has a super and has a chance to use it. How does this make it a skill leveler if everyone has one? You get a super once or twice a game usually. They should be one hit kills they're SUPER. Make another playlist like inferno but have no supers, why does everything need to be nerfed?

The only way I can see that you could reliably take them down a notch without intensive reworking would be increasing their cds. In general I find they aren't too bad (except when you're shoved into a game in progress. Then you notice them). There are some that out perform the others, but apart from that I think they're balanced.
