What you were doing is usually best, but whether on chat or wherever you find trolls my number 1 rule is don't feed the trolls. They crave attention and you could easily ignore them, but if he was spamming sexualised comments then your doing the right thing banning him even though he just keeps coming back with a different account. Eventually he will get a clue and leave, but dealing with trolls is always frustrating.

Banning him is the best option. If it continues for about 4 or 5 different accounts, you can report him for harrassment and ban evasion. That can potentially put a global ban on his IP, for whatever time period the admins decide.
