So now you have well over a thousand players who have absolutely horrid taste.[/quote]
Tens of thousands really, if not far more.
The game is incredibly easy to pirate these days. A good deal of the players on pirate versions don't even seem to be aware of the fact that they're playing pirated copies thanks to the 'CE Portable' download that claims to be the demo but with more maps.
Anyway, the point is that with a lower barrier to joining in (that is, not having to pay or go through the rigmarole of cracking), you end up getting an influx of players that are just passing through. They don't really care about the game and they'll be gone within a few months (if that).
I believe you asked why Halo seemed to suffer so badly from this and I think the answer is two-fold.
1) The franchise name alone attracts people that otherwise wouldn't be interested in the game.
2) The game mechanics allow for it. Halo probably has the best customisation options of any FPS I've encountered if you're just interested in spraying the map with grenades, rockets and tank shells.
TL;DR version: They seem to have bad taste because they're here for a cheap thrill to fill a bit of time.
