Who, in your opinion, was the greatest US president in history? And why do you believe this?
I know that this is a very controversial opinion certain to stun a few, but my favorite president is Richard Nixon.
Don't get me wrong. I am fully aware of Watergate as well as his *personal* opinions which made him a racist, misogynistic old fool. He deserved to be impeached, and it is good he stepped down.
But beyond Watergate and his *personal* opinions (the latter which don't concern me as long as he doesn't try to legislate them, which he didn't), I believe that he was one of the greatest presidents in US history and that he symbolizes a time back when the Republicans actually had fiscal credibility and good ideas, whereas Reagan would later come and shatter this with his BS reaganomics.
Nixon lowered the deficit by 2/3rds, created the Environmental Protection Agency, ended Vietnam, and started some of the first Affirmative Action programs for minorities. He also ended gender discrimination in sports by allowing women to get involved, and he definitively ended segregation in the South without sparking another armed conflict.
If that's not a good president, then I don't know what is. I believe that it was his own ingenuity which caused his downfall. He began to see himself as being above the law and invincible, he got in over his head and was his own worst enemy. But despite his tragic end, I believe that he had a good run.

People saying JFK. JFK didn't do crap. He was killed before he could really do anything. Reagan was a much more successful version of JFK

Jimmy Carter never hurt the country even in the slightest bit I think, and I am distantly related to him so that is my vote.

Lincoln then reagan r my favs. As for Nixon you are right. He is actually one of the better presidents and did ALOT. As for watergate I really don't see the big deal. When you write a paper don't you do research on the counter arguments to your thesis? I think news stations back then were liberal and wanted to get him gone. And for some reason people blame him for Vietnam. Also wasn't Nixon not directly involved with watergate but took responsibility because there were members of his cabinet that authorized the phone taping? If that's true at least he takes responsibility over the people he appointed unlike many other presidents do. Nixon also left before he was impeached. Again that's just what I remember I think what Clinton did was worse. He lied to the American people and cheated on his wife. Don't do things like that in office because it will tie you up on dealing with such a small issue when a country needs running. He had to allocate his time to extinguishing something that shouldn't concern the American people. Clinton during this time was also being informed by CIA to kill Osama bin Ladin but he had his focuses on impeachment. Clinton probably would have stopped bin Ladin because Clinton has gotten the U.S. In more armed conflicts than any other president and if he wasn't focused on his stupid mistake, 9/11 May not have happened.

Lincoln did more for this country than any other president has or will do. FDR has been the 2nd most influential, still a distant 2nd at that.
