It's not entirely unsual. Other games I've played in the past would gift everyone small items when the severs were down, or do a 2x exp time from whenever the player logged on for the same duration as the outage. The gifts were never anything "good" per se, and certainly not disproportionate to the inconvenience, but it went a long way toward engendering good will in the game community... something I think we can all agree is a good thing.

While I understand your point and agree with it being okay in certain cases, Destiny is the only game I know of that needs a working server/established internet connection to play at all. Because of Bungies spotty servers it renders the game completely useless at server downtimes. Making most players wonder, why did I buy a game I can only play some of the time? And again why would you invest more money down the line in a game that's play is not even guaranteed? Not only would giving players compensation for their lost game time be a good thing but its almost necessary for at least apologizing to customers who are not getting what they paid for.
