I don't consider strapping a screen to your face as VR.

That doesn't mean it's not cool...
-
Except it's not. It's just another gimmick that'll be irrelevant in a few years.
-
So are smartphones.
-
Smartphones aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

How do you know that for sure? VR headsets have a very fanatic niche crowd, most gamers I know in-person will buy them in the next few years. It's all speculation really, but they seem to have an audience for now.
How do you know that for sure?

niche
That's why. Smart phones aren't niche. They are used in everyday life, which is why they're not gimmicks.

Eh, I still don't see VR going away.
-
Remember motion controls? Yeah.

Bearbeitet von Bistromathics: 6/3/2014 3:16:03 PMI think most people will agree that the problem with motion control was the lack of haptic feedback, combined with the fact that it didn't make in-depth gaming experiences better. While they both might be gimmicks - an argument that can be made for nearly any technology if you're cynical enough - I don't see VR failing for the same reason.
-
I still use them, my Kinect is loads of fun at parties.
