Where's the challenge in immediately respawning upon death? At what point does it even matter anymore if you do die, do you lose something else instead? Death penalties are meant to incentivize you into improving, doing better. It aids in giving you that awesome feeling when you do finally overcome the odds without having to make that lonesome jog back to your corpse (i.e. in WoW), or waiting those long seconds on your repawn countdown. It also incentivizes teamwork, your death hurts the team, so improving and dying less will allow you and your team to stare down greater odds and come out on top. Now with that in mind I'd -never- suggest something like in Contra where your and your friend only had 3 lives each can could steal lives from each other if you ran out and they had some to space. Though that did promote some interesting team work.

  • My position is that the game is designed so that somebody will die. Whether that is due to skill, gear, mismanaged teamwork, or another reason, death at some point is inevitable. Waiting around is no fun. Why would a beginner want to play a game where he/she gets penalized for the learning experience, trying something new and dying. I paid for the game, so I want to spend time playing it, not spend time in a penalty box waiting. I've lost interest in games several times because of the time out feature. I want to be in the action, not get penalized for experiencing a natural part of the game: death. The mere disruption of action due to death should be enough to discourage you from dying. That alone penalizes everyone involved. Please don't make me sit out for x amount of time.

  • Honestly in the end it comes down to a mere matter of preference and always has. I prefer death and death penalties in games because I enjoy the added challenge. You on the other hand feel burdened by it and even turned away, as you've stated. In a perfect world there would be some sort of difficulty scale selectable by players or some such similar system, but in the end I just hope Destiny can deliver a game that can be enjoyed by everyone regardless of what side they're on.
