I don't know much about Hawken, but I'd like to comment on Hawken's integration with Steam: Hawken was free-to-play (I assume), and one of the strong points about F2P games is that they're convenient. You download, install, play. Sometimes they even play in your browser! Extra convenient. A F2P game requiring Steam isn't convenient at all, but a hassle. I don't use Steam, and if a game requires me to install it I won't be playing it. I'm sure many people who enjoy F2P games feel the same way about Steam integration.

But there are also plenty of free to play games that I had never heard of before Steam. Steam is actually a really nice way to get people to see your game.

I agree. It's a great platform to advertise your product, but you'll lose a portion of players if you go from being Steam independent to Steam dependent. You'll probably recover that loss with new Steam players though. Perhaps the player you encountered in MWO doesn't like Steam, like me. You should've asked him for more details (:- )

I guess as a Steam user I don't really see what isn't to like about it... I find it incredibly convenient
