tl;dr - The minimum wage only really helps higher-skilled workers, and they would've probably been better off anyway due to their abilities. The lower-skilled workers make less profit for the employer, and as such get fired before anyone else. Keep in mind that the lower-skilled workers are the ones we're trying to help.

You need to reword that question, bud. I'm not understanding what you're asking.
The minimum wage only really helps higher-skilled workers,
Means to me: Higher skilled workers are being paid minimum wage and lower skilled workers are being paid less and working under the table: The three dozen or so "citizens" loitering around Home Depots across the entire American southwest.

I still don't understand. Are you saying that companies bypass the minimum wage for lower-skilled workers by hiring illegal immigrants? That's a possibility. I really think you should watch the video, dude. I still can't understand what you're trying to say.

Bearbeitet von Quantum: 11/11/2013 5:56:07 AMHigher skilled workers generally don't get paid the minimum wage. It's not relevant to them in most instances. The minimum wage exists so that workers cannot continually bid down wages. Otherwise companies will get away with paying for the lowest bid; raking up insane profits will the pay of workers runs thin. Increasing the minimum wage also tends to increase the wages above it; it causes a wage shift for the bottom end of the economy.

Tbh, I don't really see what the problem is if workers want to bid down wages; No one in their right mind would bid below their cost of living, so wouldn't that be a non-issue? Also, I don't think I've ever heard of an instance where a rise in the minimum wage resulted in the increase in wages of everyone working above it. If you could provide me with some sort of example, that would be great. Yes, I know that this thread is over a month old.

This is why they catch people in circumstances like these all over the Western world.
Also, I don't think I've ever heard of an instance where a rise in the minimum wage resulted in the increase in wages of everyone working above it.
Not everyone, but the nature of employment works that a pay rise is more likely to result in employees demanding higher wages due to the fact that their current wage is not as good as it used to be relative to the minimum wage. This only occurs for lower wages and obviously not higher ones like a CEO or manager.
