i7 3770K CPU at stock speed. MSI Z77A-GD65 motherboard. 16GB Corsair Vengeance Blue RAM at 1800MHz (for rendering and high-resolution editing). 120GB Corsair Force GT SSD. 2TB Western Digital HDD. GTX 680 Twin Frozr III OC Edition (only 2GB, the 4GB didn't exist when I bought it). XFX 850W XXX PSU. Coolermaster HAF X tower (considering a downgrade to save space and make it easier to transport). Dell U2711 2560x1440 monitor.

    I can run at 40~45C under heavy load with nothing but air cooling @4.5G per core. If you can't hit 4.5 Under air then you have no idea what you are doing. An Iv would fry under those conditions. Sandy/Sandy E or Bust. The entire principle of the IV was mobile.

    Oh ye of little faith. Go ahead, outbench my 3770K. We all know that benchmarks reflect real-world performance. In a game scenario my voltage remains constant thanks in part to my astonishingly good mainboard, but the chip in part assists with the process. Your 2700K is far less stable under heavy load at high clock speed. Temperature is no matter for me. Watercooling in a case such as mine is the entire reason for the purchase. Your core may well get a better top clock speed but your overall stability and performance will never match the Ivy Bridge processor. I could have bought the 2700K (and nearly did), but I know my choice was the right one for me. In this current situation I have no need for overclocking. With the rest of my specs stomping the majority of other PCs, what good would it do? I still run my games on ultra settings at 1440p resolution with little more than a blip in increased running temperature. You cannot say the same for the Sandy. Oh, and as for your temperature remark? I noticed you say you are running a Coolermaster V8 air cooler. How's that treating you? Did I mention that my running temperature of 30 C is on stock Intel cooling?

    Please tell me more about how the 2700K is unstable at higher clock speeds... first off define higher clock speeds. 4? 4.5? 5? The machine has run at 4.5 since it was built. Never once crashing or freezing, made more remarkable by the fact it is air cooled. In fact the Chip is stable under stress at 1.305 without even touching the load line calibration.

    5GHz and the 2700K tries to eat itself from what I've seen in a friend's Sandy build. Sandy and Ivy processors can both [i]easily[/i] hit 4.5GHz under air cooling and still remain stable, but 5GHz and up and they both start to struggle. The Sandy more noticably so from a real-world scenario that I've seen with my own eyes. Whether it was a motherboard issue or just a mistake on my friend's part, he could barely get anything over 5GHz out of it, even with watercooling. As for the Ivy Bridge chip we used in another build? We got 5.1GHz out of it before things started to get nasty. Same watercooling solution, just a different motherboard. I suppose that the only fair test is to use the same mainboard but we didn't have the time to try that way. It depends. not every processor overclocks the same. When you factor in the average overclock for both processors and the %5-%10 ipc improvement there is no real advantage that Sandy Bridge has over Ivy bridge. That is unless you hit the silicone lottery and got a low voltage 5ghz 2700k. On average 200 mhz closes the gap when it comes to Sandy and Ivy. So a 4.5 ghz Ivy is pretty much the same performance as a 4.6-4.8 ghz Sandy. From what I've seen most Ivy bridges can do 4.5 ghz w/o any problems at all. When you factor in the newer technology I just cant see why you would recommend getting a 2700k over a 3770k. Now if it was between say a 3570k or a 2600/2700k I can see an argument to be made.
