Titans are tanks so that's kind of how they work, they are supposed to be "close range" while hunters (dps) are more long range and warlocks (heal/dps) are more of a mid to long range.
Sure it's possible to change it up and do as you want, but you won't be able to fully utilize the class when you don't play on its strengths.

The thing is that in endgame there are gameplay aspects that prevent the melee-focused Subclasses to truly exceed; almost all endgame stuff has those damn modifiers that make the enemies drop pools of damage on death, plus they melee you and you're pretty much done for Titans should have a passive that makes them receive less melee damage while surrounded lmao
