Let me preface this with saying that I’m not advocating for “things to be handed out” so please avoid that strawman. I just want a reasonable system that is more than a lottery with zero ways for players to improve their chances in a meaningful way. I firmly hold that a sense of accomplishment far exceeds the feeling of simply getting lucky.
The main argument I see in favor of what we have now is that things should be rare and making them less rare “devalues” them. This is actually utter nonsense and here’s why.
The rarity of an item with a function/purpose within in a system has no bearing on its value. It’s functionality does. Whether it’s powerful, versatile, or just generally useful in any way is what determines its value. There is no intrinsic value in rarity for what is a “tool” in a system, within the system itself. Especially when the system is a piece of entertainment, meant for fun and joy.
There is value to be gained from this rarity however, but only by the ones that made it arbitrarily rare in the first place. So in this case, Bungie. Let me repeat that. They are the only ones that gain anything from this. This says something about you, Bungie, and it should be setting something off in players minds that doesn’t have them defending this shameful tactic.
Why? I think it’s obvious. This is a not even a little bit subtle attempt to garner excessive play time. That’s the only reason, and they’re the only ones that gain anything from this. It provides zero benefits to the game itself, or those that play it.
This practice should be criticized into the ground by any reasonable minded person.
