The Chinese. Especially during the Warring States period. Rather interesting to see how so much can be developed from sheer war (which is why I consider myself a big fan of looking at wars in history. They always fascinate me.)

There was a warring states period in both, I believe. China’s Warring States were in the 400-200s BC. Japan’s version of it wouldn’t come until the Sengoku period (around the mid-late-1400s- 1615.)

Ah, that makes sense. I guess I just haven’t heard of the Chinese one.
