Wait, really? Huh, thought everyone knew by this point! It’s a platform brawler, like Rivals of Aether, Shovel Knight Showdown, and Kirby Fighters. While technically grouped with fighting games, this sub genre gives you much more free movement, often involves groups of up to 4, and are in general much more casual. Smash kinda started the whole sub genre back on the N64. It, and the next two installments, on the Gamecube & Wii, were almost entirely Nintendo characters (with the exception of Snake & Sonic), though the two newer games, on 3DS/Wii U, and Switch, have a much wider variety from various games. The basic idea is rather than health bars, each character takes damage that causes them to fly further when hit. You only die once you reach an off screen death boundary. The general objective is, as such, to rack up damage, and then send your foe flying with a powerful finisher. Add in a bunch of crazy items, and a bunch of unique stages, and you have a fun chaotic mess. And I mean that in a good way! (though you can of course, turn off items & hazards for competitive play) It’s also noteworthy for having the largest amount of characters in a single fighting game that I know—clocking in at about 80, I think. Surprisingly, this isn’t a quantity over quality situation, either; all these characters play really well, because Sakurai (the main dev) is a flippin’ genius! I’d give it a go if you get the chance. Pretty great game! If you don’t have a Switch, Rivals of Aether and Brawlhalla are the two closest games to it, I think. I’ve never played either, mind you, so don’t take my word on that.

Thanks for the write up! I’m one of those people who lives under his rock and is oblivious to most things going by, but occasionally snaps something up and learns everything I can about it...for example, I could tell you just about all there is to know about Star Wars, but I knew nothing about Harry Potter (beyond that it involved a kid named Harry Potter and wands) until a month or so ago when a friend made me read the books. I doubt I’ll spend much time learning about Smash since I don’t have a Switch, but I appreciate your time in answering! I’ll go watch some gameplay of it just for kicks. Rivals is better

I’ve heard it’s better for the competitive crowd, but I’m a filthy casual. :p That being said, I got it for free, so I really should give it a go one of these days.
