Fanfiction - Duality Page 9:

Cardinal snapped awake, eyes shooting open as her body smashed against the ceiling of her dream. Looking around, she noticed she was laying on a rough mattress with thin covers in a room that looked more like a storage vault than a bedroom. Candel was in the corner, the flickering light from his eye as he scanned over something the only indication he was there. Groaning, the exo rubbed the back of her neck as she stretched it. The sound caught the attention of the little drone. He turned around and rushed over to her. "Thank the Traveler you're alright! I thought you... I thought that..." he trailed off, slowing and calming down. "All your readings were normal. For any scientific explanation, you should have been awake. You were awake." Cardinal remained silent, thinking over the events of her dream. "Hello? Walking dead?" he taunted. The exo gave him a "really?" face. Candel looked pleased with himself. "I couldn't help it. Sorry," he said, floating down to eye level with her. "What's all this about? There's something you're not telling me." Cardinal didn't answer at first. It wasn't just the fact that her ghost was nowhere to be seen in the vision - if that's what this was, a vision - but also that she felt like saying it would make it real, and she wanted anything but that nightmare to be true. "It's just a dream," she finally said, pushing him away. "Don't worry about it." "Alright... well, Mikrakksis wanted to talk to us when you were ready. Of course, she also said that I should help you sort out the whole 'light' thing," Candel said. He seemed hesitant to let the subject drop, though. "Right. I still have no clue what the light actually is," Cardinal sighed. For a while, Candel explained what the light was. How it was a power that the Traveler created to protect humanity. How Cardinal was supposed to be a harbinger of the enemies of humanity with the light. All the while, the whispers spoke to her. Cardinal quickly learned not to trust them. When they met up with Mikrakksis, she was seeing to the ether feeding, rationing to each their ration of ether, the precious resource that sustains them. When she saw them, her translator boomed out her voice. "Guardian! You are safe?" she asked. The question seemed more out of curiosity than concern. "Yes. I think... but I want to help," she replied. Satisfied with the answer, Mikrakksis motioned to the servitor. "You know of ether?" Cardinal nodded. Kaska had explained on the deck. "Good. You need other, not ether, as well as other home." She grunted as she pulled the servitor along, the violet light flickering at Cardinal as it passed, as if it was damaged. "Where can I get that, then?" she asked. Mikrakksis only beckoned for them to follow. "Talkative today, isn't she?" Candel commented, "rolling" his eye. Cardinal nodded in agreement. The two followed the Kell down several twisting passageways, and though Cardinal never thought she could recognize any route, she noticed the hallway that led to the deck as they passed it. Mikrakksis led them down through the ship to the hangar, showing them the skiffs. "Little light spoke of ship found on Mars... Guardian will need a home. A place their own. Own ship, own food, own home." "Makes sense," Candel said, "but do you know where it is?" Mikrakksis grunted and nodded, gesturing to a skiff. "Take ship, find yours. Friend will fly skiff home," the large Kell said. Kaska stepped out from the belly of the ship, beckoning the guardian and ghost. "Thank you," Candel said, looking from Mikrakksis to Cardinal skeptically. The exo just rolled her eyes and motioned for Candel to come along. The flight was shorter than Cardinal expected. Kaska joined them on the sandy surface, saying something in Eliksni as he brushed sand away from his face. Cardinal had to agree, the sand was awful. At least she had the weapon Kaska gave her on the way there now. Nearby, they could see the tower. No glaring red lights threatened to take them out now, and it looked like it had a few more holes blown into the sides of it. "Hurry," Kaska growled, looking around nervously. "Beast here... powerful." He kept glancing at the tower and it's newly acquired battle damage. As if something organic could have punched through the solid steel of a bunker-tower. As if on cue, an earth-shattering roar split the landscape in two as a massive worm sent sand showering everywhere. "MOVE!" Kaska's rasping, broken word was just heard over the sound of wrenching metal and tearing wires. The two ran as fast as they could to the side, trying to get out of the massive worm's way. As soon as it had started, it was over, and the skiff they came in was torn in two. "...Powerful..." Kaska growled again, nudging Cardinal to her feet. "Find ship before beast does." "Yeah... no kidding..." Candel said, too stunned with shock to say anything else. Cardinal grabbed him and dragged him along until he wriggled free and floated along by himself. "So tech wizard, where's our ship?" Cardinal asked the drone. "Hey, cool it I'm on it! I need to make sure... yes! The cabal left it where it was. Hurry, this way!" Before either Kaska or Cardinal could react, Candel shot off opposite of the tower. Cardinal grumbled a curse at the little thing and ran after him, Kaska hot on her heels.
