My Feedback On Destiny 2 Events

Destiny events have varied between time comsuming and some fun. The fun events are the highlights I think many of us point out and praise. The Dawning from D1. Solstice of Heroes D2 (Y1). Age of Truimph (in general) However, there have also been many duds when it comes to events. Some have been PvP focused which can only interest a certain amount of players, which can be... fine. However, then there are what I like to call burnout events. These events like the current Solstice of Heroes event (that is ending) is one of those burnout events. You require a significant grind for a reward that many don't feel to be worthwhile while also... kind of forcing it on players. Now, let me share my experience. I do play MMOs. Mostly I can point to Old School Runescape and FFXIV ( Midcore Savage Raider) and they in general do events... well better than Destiny events. Sure, not all events but the stinkers from Destiny to other MMOs is pretty apparent. For one, servere grinding for events is not normal unless its an event with a significant time for players to them, and these are VERY rare. We are talking about a 1-2 month interval to do the event, similar to that of Age of Truimph. These events with grinds are normally forgivable because the devs balance them around average players who get on maybe 6 hours a week. Casual and some midcore players don't like being forced to play a game because of an event with rewards that aren't worth the time investment but just good enough to do said event. Plus, its unhealthy when you force a grind on the playerbase in a short amount of time leading to a 'crunch' so to speak for the playerbase. (cough) Getting raid ready in less than 1 week (cough). The solstice of heroes event has been a crunch grind for 2 weeks with the final week finally making the grind... well a bit less BS honestly. However, the time to grind should have been extended by a week for one, and two the final sparrow reward just sucks... I mean come on... that is the reward? Really? Look, if you want to give players a grind, do it without a time requirement if its going to take a long time. Make it a season objective like pinnacle weapons. Let players set their own pace on these things... not force us to rush and do them. Maybe... I don't know.... make consolodate the events to where after they finish you can continue said grinds in a different manner so players don't feel left out.

  •
Let players set their own pace on these things...
Lol, yeah, that's not how Bungie does things. Ever.
so players don't feel left out.
This is a pillar of Bungies design philosophy. Manipulating people psychologically over a fear of missing out. That's why there's no matchmaking for raids or in game LFG. That's why the comparatively small base of Raid players are allowed special "things" that other users (who payed the same entry price) are not. That's why Soltice is set up to be such a mind numbing grind. The whole point is to leave people out. It makes the people who do put up with Bungies BS feel special and "a sense of pride and accomplishment" as EA would say. It polarizes the game and creates "elite" players (and some really, really rabid fanboys). Look no further than reactions to the phrase "optional matchmaking" for Raids. After years of arguing, the opponents still cannot explain why an optional mode would affect them, or anyone else. Because if everyone has access to this "pinnacle" activity, they lose those that precious "I'm special" status. And that's what its all about. It is 100% about leaving players out.

  • You said people are forced to grind!!!! Ha with 7 hrs to go all three characters I did not talk with Eva to even start the quest. Challenge accepted!!!!! I know this company now and armor 2.0 will be a disaster! They didn’t force me to do anything and I’ll not buy shadowkeep and I’ll get armor 2.0 like you and not have hated myself playing things I didn’t want to for a month!!!!

I feel like another major pitfall is the activities that you are asked to grind. It'd be one thing if every activity was good or even "just ok", but somehow Bungie has created a game where the activities are so polarizing that the community is split by them. Get 75 elemental weapon kills on Guardians? Oh boy, PvE players are going to hate this! Play 10 strikes, get a load of elemental orbs in strikes, play a load of EAZ, etc.? OH man oh man, you better believe the PvP players are gonna hate it. Play Gambit? Do I even need to say it? (not to mention that "Play [activity] [x number of times]" is a really, really bad objective. Never, ever just tell players to do an activity a flat number of times.) The generalist population that enjoys everything a bit seems like it barely exists. So instead of a sort of "little bit of everything" victory parade, the quest forces players into modes that they, at best, tolerate, and at worst, actively hate. And all of that on top of framing the grind as a celebration of us. We're the ones being celebrated, but also doing the grind??? The dumbest part about that is that it is entirely possible to do that competently. Simply have the Event Vendor have the top-level event armor on display, and frame it as "here is your reward for doing good for us, but let us see you do a little bit more, show the world that you are Majestic!" But instead of the citizens giving back, Eva just kind of has us pray and I guess the Traveler blesses us with improved armor, oddly specifically suited for a parade, which we never even attend. But then Gambit is in the objectives, so....

  • The time gated crap sucks, I got my solstice armor but the grind it takes kills a players interest in the game. You get the loot then you stop playing for awhile cause your burnt out from the grind, it’s overall a bad practice for game makers
