Because WEEEEEEEEEEE! *splash*
I've read several theories, most recent suggests it is a form of communication, apparently for distances/situations where "singing" doesn't help.

I just pictured the whales jumping out of the water to yell to each other - "HEY FRANK!!!" -splash- "FRAAAAANNKKK!!!!" -splash- "YES SUE?!!" -splash- "DID YOU LOCK THE FRONT DOOR?" -splash- "OH NO....!" -splash- "I'LL BE RIGHT BAAACK." -splash-

*giggles* Good stuff. :) Isn't their singing is for communication like that? I mean it goes for several miles, IIRC, this should be sufficient for family talk. :) This is more like it calling (or yelling) a friend about fishing trip or something. :D Btw, imagine dolphins chirping "hmm, is it a warm current or that whale just pissed on me?"
