OAFL Attributes - In-Depth Explanation

Master post; loadout post; arenas post So, some of the fights that have been DMed so far have had quite a few questions on the specifics behind how your focused attributes affect how you fare in the fight. So I am posting a very lengthy, in-depth explanation of how each attribute works, functions, and most importantly, how that attribute affects your fighter. I will also be explaining what it means to "focus" on an attribute and what that does, as well as how health is measured when I talk about what it means to be at critical health in a fight. Let's start with the basics: Strength. So, Strength is actually pretty critical in every fight, no matter if you have it focused or not. The Strength attribute is checked when a fighter is attempting something that the average person WOULD NOT normally be able to do. For example, lifting a weapon is easy and requires no Strength, while lifting a person could be difficult and could require a Strength focus. Another thing Strength does is it gives you bonus damage on every attack, when you have it focused, of course. So here's the specifics: If you have no Strength focus: - You will receive no bonus on strikes. Every good hit (Unblocked/undodged/unmitigated hits) counts as 0.5 to 1 hit, while normal or mitigated hits can deal a minimum of maybe 0.25 hit. - You will not be able to succeed on Strength checks requiring primary focus when at half health, and will not succeed on Strength checks requiring primary or secondary focus when at critical health. If you have Strength as a secondary focus: - You are guaranteed to deal at least 0.5 a hit. Good hits can deal a max of 1.5. - You will not succeed on Strength checks requiring primary focus when at half health or below. If you have Strength as a primary focus: - You are guaranteed to deal 1.25 hit upon a single hit. Good hits can deal anywhere from 2-2.25, depending on effectiveness. - You will always succeed on Strength checks unless you are at less than 1 hit left, in which case you will fail Strength checks requiring primary focus. Next up is Speed. Speed is a very influential attribute. Your Speed will determine the amount of ranged attacks you can make per turn and your speed of reaction. Fighters who have already fought in duels will know what the now-infamous "window of opportunity" or "window of reaction" is, but there's a lot of you out there who haven't fought and experienced this confusing sequence of events yet, so here's the explanation: A "window of opportunity" or "window of reaction" is basically where a fighter with a high Speed attribute has an opportunity to take a reaction to what their opponent is doing. For example, say Fighter A charges Fighter B looking to bash them with a shield. Fighter B prepares to deflect the oncoming blow by turning their body and making it to where they only have to protect one side of their body. Fighter A, since they have a high Speed attribute, has an opportunity to alter their charge so that they can slightly counter their opponent's defense. This is the "window of opportunity". The higher your Speed attribute is, the larger this reactionary window is and the more actions you can take inside this window. Speed is generally checked when an action involves dashing or running at high speeds, or performing some sort of ninja thing like running up a wall or something. Here's the specifics of Speed as a focused/non-focused attribute: If you have no Speed focus: - You will not EVER get an opportunity to take a reaction in a small time frame - You can never throw/shoot ranged ammunition more than 2 ammunition per attack. At critical health, this limit becomes 1 ammunition per attack. - You will move slowly, providing an easier target to hit and will not succeed on Speed checks requiring primary focus when at half health, and will not succeed on Speed checks requiring primary or secondary focus when at critical health. If you have Speed as a secondary focus: - You will have small window of opportunity reactions if your opponent is otherwise disabled for a full turn - Your max ranged ammunition per turn is 3, limit becomes 2 at critical health. - You will not succeed on Speed checks requiring primary focus at critical health. If you have Speed as a primary focus: - You will have many windows of opportunity that tend to be larger, depending on endurance level - Your max ranged ammunition per turn is 4, limit becomes 2 at critical health - You will basically always succeed on Speed checks, unless you are at less than 1 hit, in which case you will fail Speed checks requiring primary focus Next up, Tactics. Tactics is checked when you want to do something that involves altering or utilizing your environment, such as chopping trees, hiding in a bush, etc. Also, your Tactics attribute affects how well your plans work out. If it's high, they tend to work in your favor. If it's low, they tend to go awry somewhere. Here's the specifics of the effects of Tactics as a focused/non-focused attribute: If you have no Tactics focus: - You will automatically fail Tactics checks requiring primary focus at half health, and will fail checks requiring primary or secondary focus at critical health - You cannot make the most effective use of their environment. Plans utilizing the space around them will almost always go awry in some way. If you have Tactics as a secondary focus: - You will automatically fail Tactics checks requiring primary focus at critical health - You can make a moderate use of your environment; effectiveness dwindles slightly at half health, then moderately at critical health. If you have Tactics as a primary focus: - You will ALWAYS succeed on Tactics checks, without fail. Endurance level does not affect difficulty of checks. - You can make use of your environment at any time and without any limits, and your plans almost always go as you want, barring the opponent having a reaction enough to dodge/block/whatever. Last, but certainly not least, is Endurance. Endurance is just as critical as Strength. It governs your health, defense, and ability to resist status effects. It also affects how much stamina your fighter has in one fight. However, keep in mind that focusing Endurance means that you are NOT focusing damage, and the hit to your offensive capabilities is pretty large, in comparison to those that don't focus on Endurance. However, having Endurance focused means your defense shoots through the roof. If you want the specifics on its effects, here you go: If you have no Endurance focus: - You will get winded and tired easily - You will take normal damage from attacks - Effects that rely on endurance checks to end (like being dazed) will take longer to end (usually one full turn) - You will be able to take about 4-5 hits before you are at critical health If you have Endurance as a secondary focus: - You will only get tired at half health and beyond - You take a small amount of less damage, which is defined from match to match and strike to strike - Effects that require endurance to neutralize are neutralized within a turn. If you have Endurance as a primary focus: - You will only get tired at critical health - Take much less damage from attacks. It takes about 5-6 solid hits for you to reach critical health, usually 6. - Effects that require endurance to neutralize are almost immediately nullified Now that that's out of the way, let's talk about Focusing. Your fighter will focus on two of the four attributes, acquiring the effects of one as a primary focus and another as a secondary focus. What attributes you focus on depends on the attributes you select in your loadout - naturally, this means that whatever two attributes you choose NOT to focus on are where your fighter is weaker. It's a good idea to try and play to your fighter's strengths in fights, such as utilizing your surrounding environment if you have Tactics as a primary focus. If you attempt actions for which you have no focus for, it is much harder to succeed than if you did have a focus for it. For example, a primary Tactics, secondary Endurance fighter would have no business attempting ranged attacks or trying to lift heavy objects, since he is strong in neither field (determined by Speed and Strength, respectively). However, hiding in his environment and launching surprise attacks would be playing to his strengths, so these actions would go well for him. Next, how Health is measured. Health is measured in two ways. The first is in "Hits until critical", which measures how many hits the fighter can take before entering the critical health condition, explained below. Hits are not counted with integers, but are counted with decimals. A fighter can deal 1 hit, 0.5 hits, or even 2 hits with one attack. The second is in "Hits until death", which only activates upon reaching critical health. This measures how many hits a fighter can take before death. Continued below...
