I know this might be an overused, overplayed song to many. But I love it every time, not just because it is the first song that led me to appreciate the rap genre even as I shed many of my hyper conservative values, but because it summarizes what I can only feebly describe as the "cosmic confusion" of human relationships; at least, every relationship I've experienced in my personal life and those closest to me. Subtract the obvious elements of domestic abuse it describes, and you are left with what lurks behind everyone's facade of social propriety: we are all monsters and users. Whether in our relationships or personal life, we are haunted by vague notions of what we should or ought to be, how we think we might live in harmony with ourselves and others.
But our true natures exist in violent contrast to this, with every step we take to change ourselves we take two steps back. Its just too easy to exist as what we know, rather than become what we can't understand. Familiarity, normality, "things as usual", - even maniac, suicidal dysfunction is preferable to stepping into the light of the slightest positive change. The only thing more certain than the fundamental laws of the universe is our innate inability to become anything better than miserable little -blam!-s. I'm not just bitching about the short comings of those around me, I'm bitching about myself. Both personalities of the song, user and abuser, endlessly play their parts in the deepest corners of my soul. I am their child and their father. The cycle of madness is all I am. But tomorrow I'll change, tomorrow I'll be better...

First rap song I really enjoyed was this one. I don't have some deep relation with it or anything, it's just the first rap song that kept me listening over and over. Pretty sure I learnt all the lyrics off by heart as well. I found it because someone had used it as music to their Halo 3 Avalanche racing map showcase video. I was probably around 12-13 at the time. Also, Logan Paul recently made a cover of this song, and Flobots called him out on it in a diss track, and that was pretty sweet.

2 Antworten
it summarizes what I can only feebly describe as the "cosmic confusion" of human relationships;
That's easy >Selfishness >Selflessness Those are the only 2 variables that "confuse" the issue.
