I don't think it would work.
Gaurdians are corpses.
Guardians are only alive because of the light in our ghosts.
Ghosts are "part" of the traveler.
Rogue Guardian = Ghost simply leaves = living corpse crumples or atleast dies eventually.
The traveler once served the Fallen. perhaps the fallen are your "rogue guardians"
MattPatt does a pretty cool theory on what the traveler is.

That’s an interesting theory about Guardians, but what about the Dredgen Yor storyline? He abandoned his ghost, yet he still lives on
-
He lived on until Shin Malphur got him.

But for how long. If he is hit by a high speed sparrow... What is left to revive him. Without his ghost, he will die eventually, right? Multiple of the fallen, could have been ancient guardians who were abandoned by the light rather than abandoning the light, but have since passed on due to time and have no light to revive them.

We could have these rogue guardians (could do with a better name) be a more over zealous and fanatical form of Guardian. Where they believe the end justifies the means and that the Vanguard have become weak and complacent. You could even work it into the story and have that it was them that did something to sabotage the satellites, allowing the Cabal to destroy them all and be on top of the city without being detected.

Well, based on this DLC Osiris was exiled and maintained his ghost and connection to the light, so a difference of intent with vanguard etc wouldn’t prevent them from staying connected to the traveler. Otherwise Osiris would have lost Sadira. I’d love to play a dark guardian
