Anibus 2 Chapter 5: Fire and Ice

Sorry I haven’t written in a long time, I have been busy the past few weeks and time seems to slip away so quickly. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this chapter! Click this link for the Master Post: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/225488010/0/0 The now lightless Guardians sat around a large table boasting of their feats in the battle which had ended just hours before. The renowned hunter Orion sat beside Anibus. The 2 jested with each other, it had been a long time since they last spoke. Anibus created a lie about how he got to the Farm, he couldn’t risk anyone knowing about the Mob. Orion spoke of his venture to the Titan. “It’s all fuzzy, I was looking for someone, I can’t recall who. I think my mind was wiped again, I remember you, Lyla, Henry, and William.” Orion said. “Who’s William?” Anibus asked. “The Warlock wearing Titan armor plates. He and I took care of some radiolaria infected Fallen. Strange kid, he’s a pacifist for some reason.” “So he doesn’t kill at all?” “No, he does if it’s absolutely necessary.” “I figured that’s what we already did.” “He has different standards I guess.” Anibus looked over at William, curious that a Warlock which had mastered the ways of war almost always refused to wage it. Kurt and William seemed to enjoy each other’s company. As time passed the group of Guardians grew more boisterous until their Ghosts picked up a high gain transmission from Antarctica. “You have to hear this, it’s a little static but I’ll give it to you as clear as I can.” Merrick said. The message played: “Anyone, any-... The Knights of Daw-... are under atta-... the Hive are clo-... in on us... please send he-...” the transmission was cut off. Lyla and Paradas showed great concern, at hearing it. “We have to get there and help them.” Anibus said. “We don’t have a way of getting there, there’s nothing we can do. And even if we head down there, the Cabal probably will too.” Orion replied. “Actually Orion, Hawthorne has some ships we could use to fly there. But we need to hurry, we have to save them from the Hive and get out as soon as possible to avoid the Red Legion.” Lyla said. “Good, gather your weapons, we’ve got a long flight ahead.” Anibus said. “Also, get some extra layers as well. I hear it’s quite cold down there this time of year.” They all heeded his orders. When everyone left Anibus strapped a fur collar on his armor around the back of his neck. The day’s sky shone brightly as the small group flew to Antarctica. However, it quickly seemed as if the night creeped upward as they got closer to the origin of the message. A snow storm brewed overhead as the team landed at the site. They exited their ships cautiously and were greeted with ice cold winds and snow. A crumbled building covered in the frozen white water stood in the distance. Footsteps littered the ground, the Knights had fled to another location. They went towards the Knights’ rally point hoping they hadn’t all been killed. As they got closer they heard gunshots and Thrall screams. The Guardians looked over a small ridge and readied their weapons. They opened fire from the ridge disorienting the Hive. Acolytes bearing the red armor of the Hidden Swarm tried to retaliate and were quickly killed, leaving piles of ash in the snow. “PUSH FORWARD! PUSH FORWARD!” Anibus shouted over the heavy winds. They rushed down the hill gunning down charging thrall as they came. The Knights’ morale had been replenished and they charged out against the host of Hive. The Hive knight leading the charge brandished his sword and attempted to cut Anibus’ head off and would have had Kurt not tackled him and saved him. The knight roared and swung furiously as the 2 Titans dodged his blade. Anibus took out his knife and signaled to Kurt to go for the knight’s leg. Kurt took out his hand cannon and shot the knight’s knee, severely handicapping it. Anibus slammed the knight with his shoulder and jumped on top of the creature. The last thing the knight saw was Anibus’ knife coming down into its eye. The Knights of Dawn hollered and cheered as they came up to thank the Guardians. A Hunter wearing a helmet with a fox painted on it greeted them. “Thank you Guardians, my name is Vixen.” She said this specifically to Anibus, Kurt, and William as they hadn’t met her before. “We came to Antarctica seeking to truly perfect our strength in the Light against the harsh climate. What we didn’t expect were the Hive, at first we had them under control but when our Light was lost... well then we lost ground and Guardians as well.” They walked out of the frigid cold into the surprisingly warm station. “We repurposed this old Golden Age research building for our training.” Vixen said as she walked over to a chair which seemed as if it were meant to be some sort of throne. “We did call for help, but before we leave it is imperative we exterminate these Hive.” “Now hold on a second Vixen,” Orion said, “We came to get you out, not to go on some suicide mission against the Hive.” Vixen coolly replied, “Our duty as Guardians is to protect humanity and the Traveler, not ourselves.” “You know I would normally be all for this, but if we try to go through with this we won’t be able to do either of those things.” Paradas stepped in, “he’s right Vixen, doing that would be suicide. And assuming we did come out alive, we would probably get killed immediately after. Your signal was so strong anyone could have picked it up, the Cabal are probably on their way now.” “Cabal?” Vixen questioned, pondering the situation. “Perhaps you’re right. We’ll evacuate, but as soon as we get our Light back you will come back here with us and eliminate these filth.” She said. William chimed in, “It would be my pleasure my lady.” Giving a bow as he said it. The Knights hurried as they gathered their weapons and few belongings. Anibus went outside for a moment just to get away, he liked the cold, for him it eased his nerves. He stared out into the distance, he thought he was imagining it, but he believed he saw a Cabal psion. He squinted and saw a red glare staring back at him. He ducked as the bullet hit the wall behind him. It was worse than they thought, the Cabal were already here. Hope you all enjoyed it, I hope it didn’t feel too rushed, that’s something I’m working on. However, I will be coming out with more since I am on break until January. Thank you!
