Doom of the Dragons, Part 10: Seeking

Greetings, Guardians, and here's part 10 of Doom of the Dragons! Here's part nine if you missed it. As usual, if you like it, give it a bump, and I'll get more out soon! Stay classy, Guardians! Cupun sat in the cockpit of his ship, the stars flying past his window at light speed. “Cupun we don’t need to do this,” his ghost said. “The Vanguard has put out an advisory against meeting with the Ahamkara. They’re dangerous!” “I don’t care,” Cupun said firmly. “Even they know something about those creatures, they might not tell you,” his ghost responded. “They never give out information for free. What on earth are we going to pay them with?” Cupun was silent for a moment. “We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it,” he said at last. Suddenly, one of the lights on his dashboard began flashing, and beeping sound started emanating in the cockpit. “We’re here,” he said. He pulled the ship out of warp, and the planet Jupiter loomed up before him, its massive red spot staring right at him. Cupun scanned the area until he found what he was looking for - a small planetoid, orbiting around the gas giant. “There it is,” he said. “Io.” He punched the acceleration, and sped off towards the tiny moon. The surface of Io was scarred by volcanic lows. Blue lava spurted out from small volcanos on the surface, and the rocks had been dyed a yellow-green color from sulfur. It had been said that Io had been the last place that the Traveler had visited before the collapse. But the terraforming effects had mostly been limited to the opposite side of the moon. Away from his destination. Cupun had heard that a particularly great Ahamkara lived on the far side of the moon. If there was anybody who knew what those things on Luna were, it would be him. “Are you sure about this?” his ghost asked. Cupun gripped his pulse rifle tighter. “Absolutely.” He suddenly saw the mouth of a cave poking out of a nearby cliffside. “There,” he said. “That’s where they said this Ahamkara lives.” He advanced towards the cave, and prepared to enter. Suddenly, a small rock fell on his head. Cupun looked up, and saw a pair of yellow eyes looking down on him. The eyes were attached to a small head, slightly larger than his fist. Two bony protrusions stuck out from the lower jaw. The creature, from head to tail, was about four feet long, and covered in bright red scales from head to toe. It had four legs, splayed out on the rocks above like a crocodile, and gripped the cliffside with its claws. A set of wings was folded against its sides. The dragon let out a crude squawk, and leaped to the ground in front of Cupun. It looked up at him, and then continued into the cave. “Let’s go,” Cupun said. He started after the lizard. “Wait!” his ghost said. “Are we really sure we want to follow that thing?” “Yes,” Cupun replied. Deep down inside, he knew that the dragon was leading him somewhere. Cupun followed the dragon deep into the cave. No matter how fast he moved, the creature was always just at the edge of his vision, as though it wanted to be seen, but also wanted to be able to get away. Suddenly, Cupun noticed that the ancient tunnel was slowly getting brighter. “Where’s this light coming from?” he wondered aloud. Soon, he got his answer. Cupun emerged into an immense cavern, so high that he couldn’t even see the ceiling. Pools of blue lava dotted the floor. Cupun guessed that the cavern stretched out for several miles. Scattered around the edges were multiple tunnels, some of them absolutely massive. Cupun looked around. “What is this place?” he asked. “Probably an old caldera,” his ghost said. “That was probably an old lava tube we just came through.” Cupun watched the small dragon scurry across the ground, and suddenly, jump into the air, and take flight. The dragon spread its wings, and flew across the cavern in under a minute. It soon reached the opposite end, and disappeared into one of the tunnels. “Where’s it going?” his ghost asked. Suddenly, there was a massive boom sound. Then, there was another. And another. And another. Footsteps, Cupun realized, Those are footsteps. Boom! Boom! Boom! Suddenly, two massive yellow orbs appeared in the largest of the caves. Then, the dragon that they belonged to stepped out of the darkness. Its head was three or four times the size of a jumpship. Two massive tusks protruded from its lower jaw, both of them curving towards the end. Each was roughly twenty meters long. Its legs were as wide as small buildings, and held up its massive frame. Only about a quarter of its massive body came out of the cave, but it was able to rear its massive head only a few meters away from Cupun. Its scales were bright red. The creature raised its head about thirty meters in the air. It looked down at him with its massive yellow eyes, both of them the size of a small car. Suddenly, Cupun heard a booming voice in his head. It sounded deep and masculine, and carried a faint tone of haughtiness. You are far from home, Cupun, it said. I believe that you were looking for me. Cupun blinked. “How do you know my name?” he asked. The dragon snorted, and lowered its head slightly. My name is Utūl, the voice said, and I know all.
