If our feedback matches the results of their internal datamining, and of Activisions market research, then it matters. If not...not really. Datto and Byf directly influence millions of people by showing them which opinons of this content are popular and which opinions are not. The forum can't hope to compete with that. Bungie rises or falls based on what's most popular, period. Activision doesn't blow 500 million dollars on marketing because they care what customers think, they spend it to make customers think what they want us to think.

  • So, again, what is the point of having a feedback forum here? Is there one?

  • It's a good source of anecdotal evidence that they can dip into when they want to verify their internal stats. Say numbers of pvp kills spike when Mythoclast becomes common. They research that and it looks like it needs a nerf to smooth out the spike. They run a search for mythoclast in the forum and see what people are saying. Turns out it's a common topic, people are talking about nerfing it. Result 1: Mythoclast is nerfed in a specific way, based on statistics. Result 2: People who were not talking about it lose their minds because they think complaints caused the nerf. Result 3: More people make suggestions because they think suggestions drive development. Result 4: Bungie has a larger feedback pool to check their numbers against. That's it, really. Bungie does things for their own benefit, because that's what the organization exists to do. There's a confluence of interest with the market, and they work to keep that confluence as large as possible: People throw money at the screen becuase they enjoy enough of the things that Bungie is doing for its own benefit.

  • If this were any other sort of commercial software, like say a word processor. If you went to the official companies forums to ask a question of give feed back, and you got the level of response Bungie gives, would you find it acceptable?

Yes, this is exactly the sort of behavior I expect from a company with this kind of revenue and user pool. Large companies run forums like this because it's cheaper to just let people to tell you what they want than it is to go out and ask them. This is all about offloading the cost of market research onto customers. Putting it on autopilot makes sense once you reach a certain level. Small companies have to be seen to care more about their customers because they have less room for error in their market segment. People pour ideas into this bucket and Bungie dips their tentacles in whenever they need to. They have stats on the forum to, never doubt it. If posts dip or spike that's when they worry about community management. Throw a couple replies up so people see the "bungie replied" tag. That's what that tag there for. It's a cost effective way to signal engagement and manage sentiment.

  • It's not having forums that is the problem, it is the lack of engaging with the forums.

What I'm getting at is that the problem you've identified is not actually problem, for Bungie. They're chasing an interaction sweet spot that minimizes cost and maximizes the amount of useful feedback they recieve. If managing the flow of ideas on this forum more intensely looked like it was worth the opportunity cost of paying more people to manage that flow through active engagement, then that's what Bungie would do.
