From Wikipedia:
A quarterstaff (plural quarterstaffs or quarterstaves), also short staff or simply staff is a traditional European pole weapon which was especially prominent in England during the Early Modern period.
The term is generally accepted to refer to a shaft of hardwood from 6 to 9 feet (1.8 to 2.7 m) long, sometimes with a metal tip, ferrule, or spike at one or both ends. The term "short staff" compares this to the "long staff" based on the pike with a length in excess of 11 to 12 feet
Bump on the research. But the thing is these don't look like simple metal tips or spikes, they look like cutting edges that are long enough to be daggers. Plus regardless of what inspiration it comes from, in the end it has the appearance of a bladed polearm. So calling it a "staff" would be like calling a mace a nightstick or a batton.

For sure. It definitely looks more like what I would describe as a spear than a staff. But Arcstaff kinda sounds better than Arcspear, and it fits more with the monk theme they seem to be going for.

Bearbeitet von Tyger Strayfire: 6/15/2017 1:45:59 AMNot necessarily. Monks have been known to wield many kinds of weapons, like swords, staffs, and spears. I do not deny that they are giving Hunter's a monk theme, heck I love it. I just think that a spear or a lance is a better term to bridge together that monk theme with the Hunter class since they are the primordial hunting tools, you know?

Oh, the martial artists that the monk archetype draws its inspiration from uses all sorts of weapons. But quarterstaffs are the most iconic "monk" weapon, after bare fists/feet/various other body parts. (Side note: that's probably why they removed the knife from the Arcstrider's melee attack animation). I wouldn't call it a lance, even though that would probably be more accurate, simply because most folks associate the word with the big conical ones used in jousting competitions.
-
That is fair about not calling it a lance; it would sound better but it is associated with jousting too much. Perhaps they should just call it a "bolt" rather than call it a certain weapon. Heck for the Dawnblade their super is called "Daybreak" so wouldn't be out of the ordinary. (Though frankly I think they should've switch them around).
-
Arcbolt is already the name of one of their grenades though ; )
-
That is true. We also have SUNsingers and SUNbreakers. I see no reason to not call it a "bolt". ; )
-
We have SUNsingers and SUNbreakers just like we have ARCbolts and ARCstaffs. Sharing half of the name isn't the issue, sharing a whole name is. Having arcbolt as a grenade option and arcbolt as the name of the super would be confusing. Arcspear or arcpike or something, sure. Or heck, lightningbolt would work too, you just can't call it arcbolt when arcbolt is already the name of something.
-
Bearbeitet von Tyger Strayfire: 6/15/2017 2:43:04 AMNot if you were to call it "Bolt of _______". Kind of like the Titian's Fists of Havoc and Ward of Dawn.
-
Sure, that would be fine. All I said is you can't call it arcbolt.
-
Bearbeitet von Tyger Strayfire: 6/15/2017 2:53:20 AMOh no I understand that. Rather than arcbolt I would have called it "War Bolt" or heck, even Silver Bolt to compliment the Golden Gun. (If only that was wasn't a name for a Transformer...)
-
Ok, that makes sense.
