How to Implement Trading in Destiny II

Trading would be fine in Destiny II if they implement it like ZoS does for ESO. The way it works in that game is that endgame gear earned in a particular dungeon or 12-man trial can be traded up to 2 hours from the time it drops to ANY player that was in your group when it dropped for you. With this method, the people who you trade with will have "earned" it because they did the same exact activity alongside you. There's no foul play involved. The gear is still only available to those people who work for it. Trading would be restricted to only legendary armor and weapon drops found in endgame activities such as Nightfall and Raids. Everyone wins. Frequently Made Counterarguments (FMC):
1. “Someone will try to sell their drop to players – this will cause problems.” Answer: Trading with players is only allowed for Nightfall/Raid drops AND the player you are trying to trade with HAS to have been in your fireteam when the gear drop happened. Bungie can easily lock out possible “orbit trades” by requiring the trading players to have been present in the group from the start of encounter aggro until the drop. They won’t be able to “sell” drops to players who didn’t do the activity tied to the drop. For Nightfalls, it would mean both trading players would have had to have been in the NF from orbit to boss kill. For raids, this means from the start of the individual boss encounter (aggro) to the drop. 2. “It’s not fair – they could get carried and get the drop easily.” Answer: How is that any different than what we have now? People get “carried” to the Lighthouse or through a Raid all the time. Besides, by being present in the fireteam, they will have do SOMETHING during the fight and at that point, they’ve contributed and earned the loot. Newer raiders aren’t denied Vex Mythoclast drops by the game system during AoT just because they aren’t “experienced Y1 vets”. For example, everyone who helps kick Atheon’s butt (in whatever capacity during the encounter) gets tradable loot. Period. 3. “People may not feel like trading. What if they just hold on to a drop I need…” Answer: They technically have the right to hold onto their drop. A simple solution to this issue for “stingy randoms” is to bring a friend or two to increase your drop chances to trade with one another, rather than rely on the kindness of strangers. 4. “This will make raid gear too easy to get. People will trade and get everything from others.” Answer: Trading is optional. Also, people who don’t have the luxury to play as frequently as others can use this feature to “catch up” if they or their friends are lucky with drops. Some people also aim for superior stats on their gear or certain rolls and this feature can ease the RNG grind for many.
EDIT: I put a section dedicated to answering the most common concerns regarding trading. The "counterargument" of simply "No" is not a position. If you want to give constructive feedback, please post it. I'm all for suggestions on how to improve this idea. The argument against this idea seems to just be "no" without an actual reason....

  • The reason why trading isn't in the game and will never be is because its decreases the play time required to get what you want then you'll go do something else and that's not what Bungie wants.

    • I'm on board. ESO's trading system works very well. As a grandmaster crafter in that game I have had to learn the ins & outs of the trading system. The time limit prevents gear from being sold online. The fact you have to be in group & contribute to the battle/content is nice too. Overall it really wouldn't harm Destiny. The folks against it are just the bitter hardcore gamers who want to be as people out it "special snowflakes" &/or folks who feel everyone should suffer as they once did because they had to endure bad game/content design/mechanics. That said I would make sure to add 1 thing. Items, once equipped MUST become bound to that player's account. Example: I get Bolt Caster to drop. It stays tradeable for 1 or 2 hrs with folks who aided me in killing Randal. I equip it to see what it is like. Upon hitting equip the item becomes "Bound" & it is no longer tradeable. The reason for this is so veteran players can't give their friends their hand me downs. This is ensures that folks are still running content, & working for things. Without a "Bind on Equip" system. You could have instant lvl capped players in endgame gear. That said... If anything trading might actually reduce the current amount of paid carries being done. 1. Folks would play more as they know their group (probably of friends/trusted online friends) is likely to trade them what they need should it drop. 2. The time limits would prevent folks from just sitting in social spaces selling goods, selling em online & etc. For those who see that ESO has gold services. Those are: 1. RMT for a set amount of Gold. 2. Paid Carries (Like Destiny's current ToO & Raid communities) 3. RMT off items that are not from Trials (ESO's Raids) & Delves (ESO's Dungeons aka: Strikes). To be blunt, items that are always tradeable until they have been equipped once. Folks afraid of RMT being an issue... It already is an issue & its actually worse atm. As there is legit content that for the majority of players is gated by RMT. True, this gating is caused by the playerbase itself but...that is another topic.

    • The idea is pretty solid. I have generally been against trading/swapping weapons after the travesty it made Borderlands 2 into. But this idea has some merit. Needs more specifics to not ruin the game mechanics, but still a decent idea.

        • Main reason why player trading most likely won't be in destiny 2 because a small developer by the name of blizzard who made a small unknown game World of Warcraft strongly advised them against it.

        • I don't think it will be implemented because Bungie likes us to grind, grind, and grind some more. If Bungie had the smart loot system that actually worked, maybe this wouldn't be necessary. I personally would like to see an option like the vanguards and factions have. Beat a raid boss or nightfall or any endgame activity, and you get to choose a weapon or armor or chroma package. So if your doing VoG and want that fatebringer, after every one where you get a reward, you can choose the weapon package and have multiple chances to get it.

        • This type of system works in some cases. The division didnt implement it into the game until later after release. But in the division there is so much more to gear and weapon stats than destiny. Not to mention variety. Upon releasing this i found it to only be miniscule in obtaining the gear/weapons with proper stats for my loadouts. Dont get me wrong, it helped. But it was only that way when they first put it into effect. Now you can run anything and get a crap load of loot that trading in it seems almost pointless. With the rng system in destiny, at this point, i could see how people would want trading in the game. As much as i enjoy the grind and seem to have time for it. Not everyone can do as such. Jobs and families would always come before a game. Also people saying that a low light level could easily get in a raid and get max light in no time, i personally think wouldnt ruin the game. If their friends/clanmates want to run them/trade to help them then thats their business. Thats what friends and clanmates are for. As for getting in with randoms/lfg, good luck finding an actual good team that will carry someone through end game content and be willing to trade. Im aware people do, do this. But im sure it wouldnt be simple as such. And as far as people paying for carries thats just as stupid as spending hundred on rng loot boxes that bungie themselves sell. In all reality trading COULD be vialble in this game. But gear/emblems are a central way people seem to judge players before actually playing with them. The best way, in my opinion, would be to implement in game stats you can look up on people you are contemplating giving a chance. Although there are such things on app and websites but it would make it much easier to have stats on people in game than having to do it on seperate platforms. Not to mention stop the idea that people with good gear and emblems are good.

          • Destiny 2 will not have enough loot to warrant trading. But how can i know this?? its simple Destiny 2 is not a brand new imagining of the destiny universe. it is not a remake nor is it a reboot. it is the direct sequel to the game we are currently playing. This means that there will be many similarities; one of which will almost certainly be the loot. Another similarity will definitely, I can 100% guarantee this, will be the grind. trading would lessen that grind. 3. trading(and I've seen some posts on crafting as well, this also applies) would require this game to go into more of an rpg type game. Bungie is most likely looking to recreate the success of halo, while activision wishes to recreate call of duty's success. Thus they have to keep this game accessible to as many players as possible. Keeping the perk system and leveling system simple is the perfect way to do that.

            • So I like the idea. But only certain categories should be tradeable. Take exotics for example, they used to be extremely rare to get as a drop, and they should remain that way by being locked from trading. They would be exclusive to your character as a drop

Why are you saying this idea came from ESO when this is almost identical to what happens in World Of Warcraft raids? Except far before ESO came out.

                • Oh wow I really like this! Do you think this could be applied to things like trials and iron banner as well? I can totally see this becoming a requirement on lfg "must be willing to trade duplicates" which makes sense but it'll be hard to enforce, but it'll also keep some assholes out in some cases! I support it, but honestly I'm somewhat afraid that certain lfg teams or even trials teams or anything like that could threaten to kick people who won't give them the heat they're missing... And after how God damn hard it is to find people who understand the raids even when you post "know what to do" for those dyslexic -blam!-s, it'd be impossible to find another raid team after your first one gets rid of you or extorts you

                  • It sounds like a very good way too implement Trading I really like it. But to be honest destiny would need to have 3x if not 5x times the loot it currently has. They would have to make Hundreds of more Gun and Armor sets and make tons of new perks amd such so you dont get every loot in the game in just a few weeks of grinding. Plus like some people already said in the comments they would have to take off the light level. Also remove the kiosk where you can buy the exotic blue prints. And they would have to make the rare items some what relavent this way making more room for people who want specific weapons with specific rolls. Also a Very important issue would be the currency, maybe it wouldn't have time always trade weapons with weapons but say sometimes you want the weapon to bought or lets say you wana trade items such as relic iron and stuff that you can just buy from other players.

                  • Trading should simply be a thing. Most games that have this kind of "long term goal" don't get their panties in a twist cause of gods damned loot trading. Hell. It quickly becomes obvious some players won't have access to the whole loot pool because of.. I don't know. Real world obligations. Like work. Or family. Or dying of some terrible disease. And so they just ignore elitists who want to throw a little sissy tantrum and let people play the gods damned game. The problem with Bungie, is that the people they listen to most, are the people whom most companies deliberately ignore because their logic would end up killing their community's longevity. If Blizzard had followed Destiny's path when it came out, the game would have died out within a few years, it still has millions of active players and is always getting more. Bungie is listening to the wrong people.

                  • One way this may work is if they removed light level upon item trade. Thus limiting the light level of the traded item to whatever the player has available to infuse. This would prevent fast leveling from trades and simply allow players to obtain a desired item without gaining light level.
