The failure that is Prison of Elders... A side by side comparison.

Lately I find myself loosing motivation to play Destiny little by little. So instead of playing the game, Im going to write some feedback about the game in the hope of it making the game a little better in the future. Im going to structure it as a comparison between the Prison and a normal raid. Im not going to even go into the actual content of the activities and only compare the basic mechanics. Prison of Elders was supposed to be the fun, non-repetitive end game PvE content but in reality it just isnt. -Finding a Party- Putting a team together for PoE is supposed to be easier since you only need 3 people. However there are 3 difficulties that has separate rewards so in reality you need find party 3 times. Raid need a party of 6 but you only need to do it once on Hard mode to get all the rewards. In addition, if a member drops in the middle of the prison they can not join back (or invite a new member) without a wipe. This usually means sending messages and sitting in the menu spamming the join button. In the raid they can join as a ghost and able to communicate with a mic. -Lack of Checkpoints- There are no checkpoints in PoE. This didnt seem so bad at first since each prison run is shorter. But in reality it has far-reaching consequences. Namely, you are stuck with the fireteam unless they willingly leave. Consider the case when you are at the final boss but the team isnt very good and can not beat it. In a raid, you can either leave and find a new party and start at the checkpoint, or kick the bad players who can then find other party to help them. In the prison, if you leave, you will have to start all over again. If you kick someone, they will have to start all over again. This means you can a) keep trying over and over hoping to get lucky, b) cut your loses and leave wasting whatever time you spent getting to the boss, or c) be an ass and kick other people and hope to find someone better (or get kicked and have to start all over). -Progression- In raid, lower difficulty and higher difficulty has the same basic mechanics. Higher difficulty adds level difference, tough enemies, maybe an extra mechanic but is generally the same fight as lower difficulty. A new player can progress through the difficulties by first learning to do the lower difficulty and when familiar, do the higher difficulty. PoE difficulties are completely different challenges. -Rewards- In the raid, each section has rewards and the rewards are random. Hard mode will also give you normal mode rewards. You never know what you will find. Maybe nothing, or maybe an exotic or two. Certain drops only from certain sections so there is a degree of control in what to expect. In the prison you only get rewards after the boss, and even then you need a key to get full rewards. You also need to do each difficulty separately to get all the rewards. The actual rewards are in shops that you trade for. Each week only have one choice of an armor and a weapon. If you dont like whats on offer you have 2 chances of random gamble (assuming you do all difficulties). The weapons of the prison are also laughable. Raid weapon have one extra perk while prison weapons have one less. The perks themselves are nothing special. Since prison weapons can not be rerolled, it makes them some of the worst weapons in game. The only good reward is the etheric light and it is the only real reason I do PoE. -Summary- So the basic PoE experience is... - Trying to find a party and hope they are good. - Spam join and message for wipe if not fresh run. - Waste time or get kicked at boss if team is not good. - Even if everything is good, you get crap rewards and you have to do it all over again for another two difficulties. -Some Suggestions- Just gonna throw out some ideas. I know they are not all good, but just to get the discussion started since its quite pointless to just complain about something and not make any suggestions to fix it. - Add matchmaking to all difficulties. Since you are pretty much stuck with the team you start with anyways in the current state. - Allow joining as a ghost. - Add mini-bosses between rounds and checkpoints on milestones. Higher difficulties have more rounds and mini-bosses. - Mini-bosses of higher difficulty are bosses of the lower difficulties and reward the lower difficulty rewards. - Instead of critical objectives at boss rounds, have bonus objectives. Completing these will give bonus round/rewards. - Bosses of all difficulties have chance to drop rewards in addition to the rewards from completion (similar to skolas but obviously not the same loot) - Instead of only one choice of weapon and armor have two or more (making saving the cores a viable alternative) - Gamble for weapon and armor separately requiring 2 respective cores. (2 weapon core for weapon gamble and 2 armor core for armor gamble) - Add that missing perk for prison weapons and just generally make them more appealing/unique. - Reverse the weekly rotation so that the lvl 34 difficulty is the same challenge as the lvl 32 of the previous week. Edit: Added progression points due to discussion in comments.
