Hi folks
I'm returning to the game after a long break. The last time I put any real time into D2 was when Warmind dropped and then I stepped away.
I've bought the Forsaken Legacy Collection and the Deluxe Witch Queen expansion so in terms of DLC content, I'm 99% sure I have what I need.
The problem I have is this: I don't know what to do.
• I started with my 1350 Titan and was plummeted into the current Season campaign featuring a whole bunch of stuff I don't know about (Working with the Cabal, H.E.L.M, Nightmares...)
• I made a new Warlock and was set down the starter campaign which is practically the Destiny 1 opening campaign with some tweaks here and there.
So what's the best advice? Carry on with Titan (old) or the Warlock (new). Next...
• I've got a bunch of old legendary weapons and armour. I understand these won't upgrade any further so do I just delete them?
Ultimately the TLDR is: I've not played for years. Where should I start?

3 RepliesEdited by Xero: 7/30/2022 2:26:23 PMWelcome back, Guardian! In a nutshell (a very long nutshell): 1) Titan or Warlock. Take your pick
Both are well needed in various activity. Hunters are in large abundance, but that's me being biased as I always match make with Hunters..whether I'm on my Warlock or Titan. I wouldn't worry about Hunters unless you want to make one later.
2) Weapon/Armor Modifiers (AKA 'Mods')
Remember these? If not, don't worry. Just collect as many as you can for the time being. Check your "Collections" tab for more detailed information under "Mods". Start collecting Mods by checking Banshee and Ada daily to purchase Mods you don't have, and go from there. These NPCs are in the Tower.
3) Subclasses
You might notice a difference in appearance between your Arc subclass, and Solar/Void subclass, when checking the details. That's normal...for now. Changes that Bungie is working on. Arc is next on the list. See Ikora for how this translates, and take your time to read over everything. The abilities as well as the benefits from those abilities, and what you can do with them will click in eventually. It's all Trial and Error. Ikora can also be found in the Tower.
(If you don't know what "Beyond Light" is, skip this spoiler for now. It probably doesn't apply to you.)
Did you purchase Beyond Light? You may have noticed another subclass (called Stasis) listed. I can't remember if that is still tied to the purchase of it at this stage, but it's an Ice based Super. Freeze everything, and then watch it crumble.
4) Game Modes
Vanguard Ops Vanguard Strikes has become Vanguard Ops. A seasonal activity was thrown in the playlist for diversity, and if I'd wager a guess, I think this might continue for future seasons. Fingers crossed for that bit.. Nightfalls have difficulty tiers, the more difficult, the more modifiers. They also have "Champions" which require a specific weapon (dictated by seasonal mods) to stun them so you can damage them efficiently. Some folks don't really care and might blast their way through anyways. But they are important if you're grinding for the reward, as the more killed, the better the reward. Make it a habit to learn of this, and kill them all, if possible. You might find yourself grinding this a lot in the beginning. Crucible/Trials Crucible is going to go under some "testing" with CBMM being adjusted with some loose SBMM thrown in. Hop in next season to find out more. Handcannon's and Shotguns are still present, but so are other weapons. Find what works for you. Trials of Osiris is also in the game, with the occasional Freelance mode. This game mode still has its debates, but that's something to expect, wouldn't you say? Gambit Gambit has been updated a bit as well. If you liked the mode, give it a go. It also has Freelance. Maps in PvP and Gambit seem to be scarce in number, but if that's not a concern, then Sparrow on.
5) Weapon Crafting
Question: What the FAQ is it? Answer: Select weapons can be made and readjusted with select perks when unlocked. You'll need to collect some material for that, and grind getting the gun itself. Start by checking the "Triumph" tab, and look at "Patters & Catalysts" off to the middle right to see a list of weaponry that could be acquired through RNG. Godspeed with this.
6) Raids, Dungeons and Miscellaneous stuff
Witch Queen has its Raid, but remember Vault of Glass? Yeah, that's back. Another "oldie but goodie" is supposed to be out next season as well. Keep an eye out for that. With older Dungeons, those are supposed to be weekly rotated [I think?]. But your purchase, I believe comes with two newer dungeons, one is out now, another is out later.
About Eternity (seperate area)
Xur becomes a game show host with a 6 player activity of shooting stuff, something seperate Bungie threw out before Witch Queen launched. Don't know how long that'll remain.
Continuation of 6)
Other than that, Vault space had a slight increase (600 is the cap, I think), characters are developing in the game, as the story is. (There is a timeline for reference in the top right corner of the Director). Light Level Let's not forget this. Power level has a new cap each season as it goes up by 10, I think. The soft cap is set to 20 under the cap, and Blues are the way to go to get there. Don't worry about upgrading your favorite legendary armor or weapons just yet. Use the blues. They serve purpose for now, only to be completely useless afterwards, except for materials. This tends to get complaints now and again, I don't worry about it so much. If you have a seasonal artifact, then this means that you not only have access to the seasonal mods I briefly mentioned, but it'll artificially increase your Light Level over time, so you can get into those activities that you want to... eventually. Just by playing the game. You'll see this on another player as a giant number under the word "Power". Highlighting this with your cursor, will show details of the Gear Light Level "+ X Bonus" for the total. As a new season starts, the cap increases, like said previously.
Most importantly.
Go. At. Your. Own. Pace. And. Have. Fun!
I cannot stress this enough. As much of an information overload I just gave you, follow that single step. At. All. Times. Do this on your own, or with a friend, or with a Fireteam, or find one that treats you well.
You'll discover "build crafting" with the mods, armor, and weapon combinations over time. Some things are broken, but only for a little while. Then something else becomes broken and everyone flocks to that for a season. Older armor may as well be dismantled for materials. If it's sunset it's no use. New weapons get updated. Whether they are actually new, old ones reworked into the game, or just a rip of a gun from D1. Get the materials and know what they are. The basics: Upgrade Modules Legendary Shards Glimmer Planetary Materials Other "just as important" stuff: Enhancement Cores Enhancement Prisms Ascendant Shards (AKA "Golf balls) Ascendant Alloy I hope I didn't miss anything.
All of these in the spoilers, to me, seem to be the important details to just take note of, rather than diving in headfirst into everything blind and pulling a Jack Skeleton, shouting "What IS this?" out loud. Eyes up, Guardian. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Your playing destiny 2 that’s where you are, probably at home on some kind of computer or something ;) your welcome
-
Just grind strikes for the rest of your life until your friends and family leave you and you’ve gained 50 pounds, then maybe you’ll earn a video game triumph. 🤩

2 RepliesRecommend following the actual new light quests (as boring as it may seem) will help get you re-integrated into the game. If that’s not your style, I’d do the prior campaigns then doing the Legendary Witch Queen campaign. It’s difficult. But you’ll be AT LIGHT or above by the end. Very very worth while. 👍

4 RepliesWhatever you do, don't place the blame where it belongs (Bungie) Youll get banned for "hate-speech"

Heya Crouch Lots has changed since the Warmind days and you'll probably be feeling quite lost in even the menus. I would advise taking things slow. Start of simple and reoreintate yourself. Choose a campaign like Witch Queen and play it through. This way you'll begin to see how subclass menus and the UI overall has changed whilst doing something purposeful and fun. You can do this on any class. Try to get yourself into an active clan in your timezone. Don't be afraid to join their discord or even a clan network as it will give you a huge amount of opportunities to run different content across the game. You'll also start to make connections with other players in the community to form a regular group. After the campaign I would pick a mid term goal to pursue. Either choose to complete the new seasonal content, choose a core playlist title to go after or look into some entry level difficulty raids. I say this because it is one thing to specifically pursue. It will help you continue to gear up and you'll end up creating side goals that will be useful for you in any area of the game. If you're on xbox or PC feel free to invite me for a game and we can run anything you like :) Bl nd

Edited by Demon_XXVII: 7/30/2022 12:12:09 AMFirstly Find a clan of players that will help you catch up (I know a good group) Secondly Stick with just one character Titan or Warlock, both have very strong skill sets (You probably have more gear for Titan, but most of it will be throwaway) Use these next few weeks to learn the system & be in a good starting place for next season Getting one guardian through prep & ready to jump into the fight If you’re on PSN & you have a headset/mic Gimme a shout I’ll help you (be it gameplay/general/advice) No tricks 👍

GoldenKnight_0pineapple 🍎 - old
I'd start of new (warlock). Its just easier that way tbh -
Pick a character, any, that you like. And just go thru quest tab and take your time. Enjoy it. Current seasonal content probably first. Nothing else would be time gated.

Edited by SckidMarx: 7/31/2022 12:35:17 AMLOL...I returned about a month ago after taking 2 years off...I got back on and thought what in the h e l l did they do to this game...It's freaking AWESOME now. I still don't know what all I'm supposed to be doing all the time but I sure am having a blast figuring it all out. I even joined a clan again...as far as old weapons go I use some of them in the crucible so they still have value. I just can't part with my old friend Uriel's Gift and my 1st ever master worked weapon the Origin Story.

Well after warmind was forsaken which is gone now Then was shadow keep still around nightmares started here Then beyond light stasis started here Now witch queen I would start by playing something else

I actually picked up D2 during Warmind so I understand roughly where you're at story wise. I'd recommend getting beyond light if you don't have it. Play through the prophecy dungeon, then play through beyond light to unlock Stasis and battle Eramis. Run the Deep Stone Crypt raid, it's awesome. Watch some of Byf's videos on YouTube to fill in the story gaps from season of the Hunt, Worthy, Splicer, and Lost. Then burn through witch Queen and the psychic war missions you can find in the Helm and run the Vow of the deciple raid. Then you'll be roughly caught up to the current seasonal content. As far as gear precision frame scouts and cannons are good now. Wave frame GLs are really good in PVE, and so are GLs with Blinding nades. Resilience gives you 40% damage reduction when maxed. Stack with seasonal elemental resistance mods for maximum tankiness. There's more too. Happy to answer any questions you may have. If you need a fireteam buddy I'm also happy to help.

Ehy Guardian. First of all, welcome back =) yeah, as you can see a lot of things are changed, but don't worry: it's not so terrible as it seems at first approach. For now, I'd suggest you to bring on your Titan and put aside the new Warlock character. As you've noticed, the New Light Experience might be even more confusing that catch up with what happened so far. The Forsaken Campaign is no more and you can't play it. You can only complete a couple of quests on the Dreaming City and that's it. In order, you should play the Shadowkeep Campaign on the Moon with Eris, then move on Europa and complete the Campaign there with variks and Elisabeth, aka the Exo stranger, to unlock Stasis. Then, go on Savathun Throne World and complete the Witch Queen Campaign. Once done that, you can also catch up with the current Season story line on the Derelict Leviathan. About your Weapons and Armors, keep changing it until you reach 1560. Don't waste materials for now, keep changing with what you find. Once you've reached 1560 which is the Soft Cap, try to find Legendary Weapons with Perks combination you like and Armors with decent stats. Also, maybe for now it's better if you ignore the Solstice in order to avoid stuff over stuff. Basicaly, just try to clear your Activity Tabs from the Campaigns and then focus on the rest. If you're interested on the lore and what happened, you might open a thread in the Lore Forum and ask for a summary.
-
Well you certainly have lots of content to go through! My advice would be to play through the campaign stuff you missed in order as best you can. Also make sure to watch what vendors are selling each day/week to look for good weapons and any armor or weapon mods you don't have yet. You can now check vendor inventories at any point in the app which makes that a LOT more convenient
-
Did the same. Came back after 3 years. I came back in May. I would start with Witch Queen Campaign. Do Legendary difficulty if you have someone helping you. Then just do the season of the hunted quest if you bought it. If not, just do strikes. And then raids. That’s basically what I did.
-
I would go for titan at the moment. Strongest class in PvE and PvP at the moment. Always barricades and overshields in PvP. Also in PvE it is really strong and with classy restoration from the artifact you are healing all the time. The new Lorely helmet is the way to go. Also if you play void. Bubble is the fastest charging super in the game. They now put supers in tier modes where some charge slower then others. Also thundercrash is still one of the highest dps supers and since next season will be arc 3.0 you should be good on that one too.

I also just returned two weeks ago after a more than two year break. I see the advice people are giving you is all over the place. So let me just tell you what I'm doing: Purchased the three dlc's I missed: Shadowkeep Beyond Light The Witch Queen Started playing through each dlc, starting with one character then on to the next. I'm learning the new upgrading systems, currencies, etc., as I go. I googled the 'top Destiny 2 weapons' so I'm sure to keep the good ones as they drop. If I didn't do this I would have either deleted and/or simply vaulted some top weapons that have dropped so far since I don't always try out every weapon that drops. Just have fun running through the campaign missions and other acitivities, you'll become familiar again as you go. Good luck.

Hi, I'm a veteran player and I also have no idea what to do. Game be a mess, man. Just shoot poo in the face and enjoy that, everything else is "whatever"

1 ReplyThanks to everyone who’s replied and given me advice or offered future support. I saw a post floating around about “can’t people be nicer to each other” and I’ve found nothing but spot on people in this thread :)

Check your old stuff before you toss it. It will show how far it can be upgraded. Run tons of bounties to get your light level up, especially the weeklies. The Witch Queen will take you a while. I'd suggest running the whole thing with one character first. Once your light is higher you can transfer extra weapons to the others to bring them up faster. The new mods and crafting are pretty confusing, so don't feel badly if they make your head spin. There's also the seasonal artifact, down below your ghost, which needs to be upgraded. Just check every now and then to see if you can. Its' tied into specific weapons which work against certain champions (extra tough baddies). You're going to spend as much time online doing research as you do playing for a while.

4 RepliesHey. So you have missed a lot of story, but from a game play - work through the Witch Queen story on your Titan. Here if you need help with dungeons and quests etc… after the campaign. The Cabal under Caiatl are allied because Torobatl the Cabal homeworld was largely destroyed by Xivu Arath, Oryx and Savathun’s sibling. Caiatl wants to help us beat the Hive and the Darkness. Calus and his loyalist Cabal are still our enemy as Calus has gone to the Darkness.
-
If you're confused on the narrative (current and past stuff) there's a handy icon tucked away in the corner of the director that shows a timeline of events. It's not super in-depth, but it may help explain some stuff.
-
In terms of campaigns, use your Titan and you could follow the story. Forsaken was removed, so if you bought the Ciphers, use them at the Monument of Lights in the Tower to buy Exotics. That would be Shadowkeep, Beyond Light in order to unlock Stasis. Then you would start with Witch Queen and that catches you up I'm terms of the story.
-
Mate I felt the same after just skipping most of this season. No idea what's going on 🤣

2 RepliesUse whatever character you want to, a new one will be a bit behind to begin with but like you said, all your gear has been retired so even a fresh start doesn’t set you back too much and it might be nice if you’re coming back after a long time. I’d try and play any campaigns you have - that’s where a lot of the story and best mission design is. In your menu you should have challenges or something like that and they are categorised into ‘seasonal’ etc. Just do the main one to begin with. From there just carry on working through your quests. As you do the campaigns (Witch Queen is amazing) you’ll unlock more.
