It a weird situation really. On one side they want you to have your old exotics and want you to still be able to use them. What they don't want is you to have them fully upgraded so they automatically crowd out the new gear and stop you from using them. There's a sense of exploration but it will always be a side thing because you will use the 360 gun over the 300 gun no matter what. Its really just a means to stop you from having maxed out guns when you fight all the new shit. It really shits on difficulty.

  • The thing is, I don't always use my maxed guns, because sometimes I like the mechanics / perks of my non-maxed guns. Especially for stuff like patrolling. Sure, when I'm raiding I'll try to use my maxed guns, but I like to change it up and enjoy the different items I've collected. I just wish it were less restrictive in PvE. It means I have to carry around legendaries I won't fire once just so I can swap out my exotics. It is clunky. I'll happily follow the path to upgrade my exotics over time if I want to continue using them, and I love new things so I'll still seek out the new guns and probably use them a lot as well. I just wish there weren't so many arbitrary constraints limiting me from using gear I own. I've never experienced it in an MMO-ish game before. Let alone a shooter. I totally agree that it feels like a weird situation. I think that they've realized the current state isn't ideal, and they obviously have a lot of business pressures and needs for their new content, but I think letting people play how they want to play, especially in the open world parts of the game, or even more so when they are in instances with their friends, is important for long-term retention and player enjoyment. By removing the exotic limits outside Crucible I could: level weapons more efficiently via bounties (reducing the need for lower experience curves on upgraded exotics), and enjoy more items I've worked my butt off to own. I really don't think it would negatively impact PvE. Oh wow, I super-oneshotted that Dreg with my Ice Breaker, and could instantly switch to my Truth to shoot some Minotaur. How game breaking. /s

  • This is where Diablo 3 and Borderlands 2 kick the bejeezus out of Destiny. Both those games do not restrict you in equipping yourself with crazy gear - just the opposite really. The only exception being you can't use multiple copies of the same legendary item (Exotics in this game, though Exotics pale in power compared to those games' legendaries). I get why Bungie put in the limitations, but ultimately I feel like it hurts creativity and variety in the long run, at least until we get a better, wider array of stuff to use (or they wildly boost the power of exotics). It wouldn't be so bad in PvE, but in Crucible it probably would be too much for someone to be running around with the Vex Mythoclast, Plan C & Gjallarhorn for example - that's just entirely too much firepower.
