Rasputin is an AI (purportedly the only surviving one) Warmind that ran defense systems and somehow survived the Collapse.
He appears in the 3rd and fourth story missions early on, where you discover him, and he takes over the Array you activate.
He has no apparent role on the Moon or Venus (some speculation is that he's who the Exo Stranger is talking to).
Comes up again on Mars in the Dust Palace, where you break into the AI Research centre, but Rasputin has again seized control and locked you out.
The final mention is in the Dust Palace strike, when the Kabal send the Psion Flayers in to try and get Rasputin and/or whatever he's guarding, but Guardians come along and interrupt the process and kill the Flayers.
He is apparently at the least, antagonistic to Guardians, clearly not in co-operation with the Traveller/Speaker. But also not working with the Fallen or Kabal (both of whom are attacking him in different missions)

One of the cards says he survived by "shrugging off" iirc those he defended, killing buckets of them. This meant that the darkness ignored him and went for the traveller (who defended us).

Edited by sXeth: 9/23/2014 6:27:58 AMMy personal armchair theory is that he actually attacked the Traveller with defense systems, which caused the broken off shard that the Hive ended up with, aligning with the Darkness in exchange for a passover. And why he keeps blocking all the Traveller's agents from getting into his databases. Afterall, the Traveller got damaged somehow, but the Darkness doesn't seem to have the capacity for direct intervention or attack on it, and even its minions have to go through complex rituals. A friendly fire shot it wasn't expecting seems like a likely way to have sustained the damage.
