Nice bait, not. I'm annoyed at the decision because I supported Kinect and liked the idea of where it could take the gaming experience, but that's not going to happen now that a Kinect-free SKU is being released. Kinect will remain a gimmick thanks to whiny bitches.

Kinect would have remained a gimmick if they kept it. I don't know about you, but I'm willing to bet most gamers would rather use a controller/M+KB than wave their arms around and talk to the console.

  •
than wave their arms around and talk to the console.
You're one of the reasons Kinect will remain a gimmick. Watch demonstrations of what even the original Kinect sensor can do when non-gaming companies start using it. Then you'll understand why Kinect supporters are disappointed. If you genuinely think that the Kinect is only capable of reading your arm movements and registering your voice, you're seriously misinformed. I mean, just look at what the OLD Kinect was able to do when hacked. That's 4 years ago. Imagine what it could be used for in another 2 years. Or hell, in 1 year if MS started actually doing something with it. Ugh.

There should have been useful applications for the kinect at launch. Asking people to pay a premium price tag for a promise is a bad business model. I agree with the sentiment that the kinect is what differentiated the two leading consoles but I would not have purchased an Xbox One until a developer showed me that it was worth purchasing. The idea that gamers would bash their fellow gamers instead of a company that made a poor choice is exactly why the term "shill" gets thrown about, even if it is kind of mean-spirited.

  • I'd seen videos of people demonstrating just what the sensor was capable of as a pre-release product, and that's what gives me hope for the platform. Now, I suppose I can't do anything but agree that MS should have made a better support suite for it at launch to entice the buyer, rather than force them, but I still feel that, given time, Kinect (and the Playstation camera as a result) could have been what was needed to push gaming that little bit further. I know, based on what people have done with the sensor, that Kinect holds huge promise. I just feel let down by MS that they've gone back on their ideas of pushing the industry forward. I suppose we've got Oculus to look forward to, but knowing Kinect isn't necessarily going to be with every console now... it's going to deter developers. Or, perhaps I'm wrong, and the good developers, those keen to help the industry progress, might well be just as keen as ever to get the hardware utilised. Maybe I'm just wrong, and developers don't need to know the platform is guaranteed to be out there. I mean, if you know what your audience is, perhaps that's enough as it is to push yourselves towards a new idea. Beh. Spitballing. I just get riled up when console wars are mentioned. PC master race.

Even the original kinect showed huge promise. I've seen so many videos of non-games-industry entities do some really cool stuff with the original and new kinect but MS really dropped the ball in not having a first party studio really show off WHY the kinect is such a great device. As a result, I personally did not see the point in forking over the cash for it. I had planned on getting an Xbox One eventually and hoped that someone would've done something noteworthy with it by then. Voice commands aren't going to cut it because the cheap pack-in headset that the competition offers voice command technology. I still think MS can have one of their first party studios make a game that truly utilizes the kinect. That would give people a reason to purchase it. It won't be easy but it shouldn't be. All I'm saying is I don't blame anyone for passing on a $500 promise and I don't think it's right for consumers to attack each other, either.

  • This is exactly what I'm talking about. Something should have validated its existence at launch.

I still think you could have been nicer with your delivery. :) But yes, I agree. The onus is on the product creator to show its value. A promise may be enough for some but it isn't enough for me, nor was it enough for a large portion of the gaming community it seems. I'll still sit back and wait and see what becomes of the kinect. A first party studio can still pull off some cool stuff with it; that's probably how it should have been approached in the first place.

  •
I still think you could have been nicer with your delivery. :)
I know, but after every single day of seeing super-opinionated pro-Kinect inclusion posts on r/XboxOne, and frequently on BNET, it gets tiring. The console would have suffered hard if this decision wasn't made. I own an Xbox One and a Kinect. I'm not unplugging it, and I enjoy the voice features. I just don't think shoving it down people's throats in hopes that developers will take full advantage of it, which is exactly what people who defend the Kinect do, is considerate for the much larger masses.

  • So, about a 3-4?
Kinect will remain a gimmick thanks to whiny bitches.
It was always a gimmick, and trying to force it down people's throats wasn't going to change that.

  • Attention seekers like yourself make it about a 3, yeah. Kinect as a required, bundled piece of hardware would ensure that developers knew it would be present, and as such could experiment with the device. As Kinect-free units will undoubtedly overtake the Kinect bundle in sales, developers have less of an incentive to try and push the hardware. I don't know what Kinect could be capable of, but all I do know is that by making it optional, it remains a gimmick. Yes, Kinect always was a gimmick, but the Xbox One gave the hardware a chance to become more than just a gimmick, and branch into an integral part of modern gaming. Instead, we're going to be stuck with shitty Kinect games every quarter for casual gamers. -blam!-.
