Most likely the compliment of abilities that your fire team brings with them into the frontier for missions, or the arena for competitive play, will greatly influence the effectiveness of your team in combat. I've seen some ideas in different places about it, but not a direct topic.
I want to know what the community thinks about fire team composition. “Will we need one of each class to be effective?” Or “Will there be enough overlap to mix-and-match the classes even in tough situations?”
I would also like to hear some strategies about how you would use different fire team combinations.

I think that the three classes will be different enough to allow players the versatility of playstyle that Bungie has promised, but I don't think that each class will be able to fill every roll. So far we've seen the hunter, as a damage dealer CQB and ranged, the warlock, as heal/buffer and ranged damage dealer, and the titan, as a CQB damage dealer. We've aslo seen some sort of shield ability for the titan that I haven't heard a name to yet. (at 3:22 of vidoc 2 "out here in the wild") http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1OjUWw43co If you think about it it's not too hard to imagine a class like the warlock being able to have a variety of focuses that would allow a player to perform almost any role, because of space magic. It could easily be used as an umbrella explanation, but what about the other classes? It's not hard to imagine a warlock channeling his magical energies into himself to act like a tank for a bit and it's not hard to imagine the hunter using some super to buff his whole fire team instead of just himself. It's not hard to imagine a titan throwing some electric javelin for ranged damage dealing, but it doesn't seem likely that a titan will be able to heal his fire team like a warlock will be able to. I could see a titan keeping a medkit stashed away for emergencies or between battles, but probably not in the heat of a fire fight. This leads me to my point, which is that if you think hard enough about it almost ANY class could fill ANY role, but it's not likely because then all the classes would be basically the same. One could argue that every class being able to fill any role would allow guardians to team up with players of any class and have a functional fireteam, but is that what we want? I think the strength of choice is the distinction between our options. I believe that having to seek out an rely on friends who are a different class, who can fill roles that we ourselves could not, would bring more people together. In this way the different classes would be complimentary instead of inter-changeable. That being said, if we have to rely too much on team mates and other classes, then we as guardians would feel powerless on our own. We would be compelled to specialize in the things that other classes could not do in order to be desirable in a fire team. This is a classic problem that I have with some MMO's. Even though you have choices about how to level your character, the abilities aren't good enough for you to want to break the mold of what people would find useful in their group. Since Bungie wants everyone to feel like they have valid choices in front of them, the only solution I can see is to allow each class to fill a limited number of roles equally as well as another that can fill that role. For example: Hunter and Warlock have a focus/super for ranged damage dealing, but Titan should not. As awesome as I think it would be as a titan to throw some electric javelin and cause an explosion, I don't think that it would serve the distinctions between class choice if each class could do anything. This leaves us, predictably, in the middle where each role can be filled by two classes equally as well. As far as how this will be accomplished exactly I'm not sure, but I think that a formula like that would provide a balance versatility and validation among guardians in Destiny. Sorry for the long post. ^_^; Hope you enjoyed reading.
