Am I the only one who didn't like Pacific Rim? The soundtrack was great, but other than that....

YES
No, but I loved PR.
Honestly though... How? I understand you're into Dinosaurs and the like, but this was just so...generic.

Because 2500 tons of awesome In all honesty, here you go. It's an intelligent movie under the guise of a dumb blockbuster, and that's what gives it such an awesome charm.

Regardless of how well it did visually, it doesn't change the fact that I didn't enjoy it. I prefer awesome dialogue over awesome visuals, tbh. Which is sort of why TDK is so awesome in my mind (although that movie has phenomenal visuals IE: the scene where the dead Rachel is reading off her letter, and Batman flips the coin around in his hand.) I actually didn't want to see it, but my brother is really into dinosaurs (I think I've told you about him before) and it was his birthday, so I took one for the team.

A) Yep, Spinosaurus man. B) Then you're a supporter of more heavy handed story telling- and I like heavy handed stories myself, don't get me wrong. However, I'm equally impressed when a movie manages to convey its themes through visuals and design language as well.
-
A) Surprised you remembered. B) I don't know why I enjoyed MoS so much them. I'm reading the novelization (which I have heard good things about) to try and get a good grasp of the story before my LE Blu-Ray disc pre-order comes in next month, but let's be honest, the movie is very visual-heavy.
-
A) Heh. B) Man of Steel was rather heavy handed as well, like the Dark Knight Trilogy, but managed to also contain a distinct visual flow. Indeed, I think the clashing of both those elements resulted in a lot of the criticism it receives with regards to pacing.
-
B) I hate it when people criticize the movie based on pacing. I absolutely love the Kryptonian-lore side of the DC universe, so the first half of the movie, I was foaming at the mouth. And the second half was just mind-blowingly awesome. It was great to see Kal adjust and adapt to his enemies (and lose his shit on Zod at his farm.) I guess you could chock it up to the fact that I've just started getting into DC the past couple of months, but I really enjoyed it. It's probably my movie of the year 2013.

Edited by kgj: 10/6/2013 3:58:39 AMI disliked the pacing myself, though I can see why it has merit- it creates contrast between scenes. ROBERTO jh PM'd me an excellent analysis of Man of Steel, and in it he mentions the contrast.
At one point in the movie, we see Kal-El don the red cape of his heritage, and his eventual iconic legacy, and in that moment, he flies, up, up and away, hurtling around the earth at supersonic speeds, going faster, faster until he soars over the earth and hurls himself back towards the planet and…the scene ends. The very next time we see him, no more than five minutes later, he’s wearing jeans, a dirty T-shirt, a jacket and a baseball cap. This used to be the scene I would point too as an example of the film’s shoddy pacing, but now I look at it differently. I realize the juxtaposition of the two very different characters. Kal-El is mild, meek, somewhat lost and confused, and like Bruce Wayne playing Batman and visa versa, pulls off his secret identity quite well. But the man he was not 5 minutes before? That was a different man entirely, full of energy, enthusiasm, power and idealism. In that scene, I believed a man could fly, and the movie juxtaposes the speed and brilliance of the first flight with mild-mannered Kal-El, hiding his face with a baseball cap, unsure of himself. It was almost jarring and I did in fact used to hate that transition, but now I realize that perhaps they were trying to prove something.
I hope he's okay with me putting this here... :$

Wow. That is great. You guys are so smart.
-
Not necessarily, I'm just some guy who likes typing stuff at times. ROBERTO is picking it all apart.
-
But you have to recognize your superior intelligence, right?
-
Not necessarily intelligence, but I have exhibited a sizable amount of knowledge here. That's not to say I possess any more of it than anyone else on here, just that I've made a few posts with more content in them.

But you A) word it intelligently B) needed intelligence to understand the concepts
