I wouldn't be surprised if the public events became the raids of other persistent world games. If this is true I think a lot of us will become public event junkies towards the end of each of the four Destiny chapters/parts/games.
I do wonder if there will be some sort of lore based early warning system for public events such as broadcasts from the tower warning of incoming enemies/enemy forces movements/enemy patrols.

The broadcast idea, that would be awesome. Maybe even just a siren (like the ones we use for tornadoes), or even your ghost alerting you of an incoming message from the city, or it could also be just you hearing from other players that the city is being attacked. Anyhow I think it would be amazing. Just sayin' :P

But we already know Destiny will have Raids.

Edited by Tibbaryllis: 6/24/2013 5:58:40 PMI suspect Destiny will have two major flavors of PvE raids: Either form a raid and go attack the enemies <outpost, specific resource, important territory, important person (leader/commander/etc)>, or form a raid and defend <the city, new colony, specific resource, important territory> from the enemy. I wouldn't be surprised if there are instanced raids unique to your raid group, but any of those scenarios could also play out as a public event. I also suspect public events will be instanced as well since its unlikely everyone actually in that area of the game would be able to enter the event. What is more likely is that x (6-12?) number of players will be assigned to public event letter A-Z based of their seamless matchmaking running behind the scenes. If this wasn't the case, and there isnt multiple versions of the same event running at the same time, then I foresee a lot of sitting and waiting near public event zones hoping to be selected for access to the event that is starting. This, IMO, would not represent the seamless transition to public cooperative/competitive playing that Bungie seems to be hoping for. Edit: I suspect what I'm describing would fit into the Strike option in the following picture posted be DE4TH. While the description under raid seems like we'll be exploring things like old installations/fortresses/mines/giant motherships, etc.

I would really like that. Personally I have never seen a raid done where you have to defend your home front. But that would be nice instead of you attacking you get an emergency call saying the walls are under attack or maybe in some rare occasions breached.

Look at this menu. It confirmed several types of gameplay.

What everyone else said, thanks. Where'd you get it from?

It was from one of there first vidocs about Destiny. You can find it on Bungie's (DestinyTheGame) YouTube channel.

Thanks!

Thank you for getting that picture

Edited by Tibbaryllis: 6/24/2013 5:56:00 PMI wonder if those queues are similar to the ones they use in WoW where all of the raids are areas you can physically walk to in the world, but by hoping into a random/selected queue you're able to instantly be transported to that raid with a party. Example: For simplicity sake lets say there is a popular raid that is in a public event area in Old Russia. I can either leave the city and walk/fly to Old Russia in my personal ship, enter into the Old Russia area, walk to the event space, and wait for the event to occur, or I can enter into one of these Raid "hoppers" and it will instantly take me to the event once a full party has been selected and the event is starting. The latter sounds like it has a major advantage, but perhaps the former has its Pros as well. If the event queue is restricted perhaps you can't queue for that certain dungeon until you've reached a certain level/completed a certain task/found the raid area, whereas by finding the raid location in real time in game you're able to enter it without said restrictions. With as much exploring as Bungie seems to want us to do this would seem like a logical "best of both worlds" system. EDIT: From that picture I do notice there isn't any sort of "Free Roam" option where I can fly to an area just for the sake of exploring that area. Interesting. Hopefully the extra unoccupied spaces at the bottom of that list allow for such a thing. I'd hate for your ability to explore Old Russia to be limited to either you having done it during that particular chapter of the game or by randomly ending up there through one of the random hoppers.

I agree with everything you just said. When they looked out at the mountains in one of the demos and said they planned on making that all playable area, I was really hoping that translated into a free roaming world like you have in most MMO games.

That would be cool if we had an early warning system. If people do become Event Hunters, I think that would be their favorite tool.
