If you've seen the concept art and read the reveal articles, you'll obviously know of the pike and the so-called "spider tank". Now, thinking over everything we know, and in particular, the example given to us about players spontaneously appearing in your world, it possibly reveals how vehicles will work in Destiny. It was mentioned the female player that saved them came riding in on her pike, however, she killed the enemies using a weapon called "The Fate Of All Fools," not her pike.
So if this player resorted to using her gun she was wielding rather than her pike to defeat her enemies, it almost seems like vehicles in Destiny may be like mounts in other MMOs in that they're used strictly for transportation. Now, there's always the possibility that the weapon was somehow one that was able to defeat the enemies more easily than the pike's weapons, but do we even know if the pike has weapons? There was no mention of this player even attempting to use them if there are.
This all really begs the question: will vehicles in Destiny be like they were in Halo, or more like typically seen in MMO's as only transport? In other words, will we able to kill some enemies by splattering them or using a main weapon on the vehicle? Will we be able to find a vehicle lying around in the world for anyone who happens upon it's taking? Will we be able to dismount it and let a friend ride it if we so choose? Or will vehicles in Destiny be exclusively ours and ours alone? Will we only acquire them through gambling, purchase or quests? Will they only be used as transportation and nothing more?
And as for the "spider tank," if we should happen to encounter some fallen walking with one, can we jack it and use it against them, or will it simply be a non-drivable vehicle? I can understand that Bungie is taking a more MMO approach to everything, but I still feel keeping vehicles in the more Halo sense would provide a more full and entertaining experience, especially in something as open world as this is claiming to be. If you're pinned down and have no ammo for example, you might end up retreating in a different direction than you came, only to stumble upon an abandoned pike that would allow you to take down the enemies and move on with the story. Maybe if you and someone else who's got a camo ability stumble upon a "spider tank," you can distract the enemies while the camo guy flanks the tank and jacks it, before using it against the enemies to clear the way, and let you hop on back and continue on with the mission with some heavier firepower.
Thoughts? Opinions? Let em' flow.

I think she probably stepped out in this case just to integrate the "unique weapons" into this story. I imagine vehicles working on a system where you buy it at a shop, maybe with custom additions that you've found, or constructed. Maybe you have some sort of hanger, where you can keep and modify your personal Pike without it being at risk. "At risk of what" you say? Well I imagine that getting out of the vehicle outside would leave it up to grabs like any vehicle in Halo. This could mean that you can use the pike all the way through the game if you like it's design, by adding guns. Also, a lucky character in a bind might find a vehicle way out of their league left by some unknown guardian. The person in the story may have simply bought a cheap Pike and not added anything to it, so that she can leave it outside of the dungeon without risking anything important.

3 RepliesEdited by POKEY CLYDE: 2/18/2013 6:16:38 PMWell, from the enemy they were describing, these things would probably be the equivalent to the hunter. Can't splatter a hunter, and the pike, through it's concept art does seem to have guns, but they'd be small weapon fire. I think maybe Bungie has done a better job at balancing vehicles. Vehicles in Halo are overpowered. They're meant to be honestly, a team effort is required to take them out. But think about it this way, if we get experience for killing enemies (because there's a player progression system in place), why would they give us vehicles which would kill enemies so quickly, and so easily? In Borderlands we get extremely less exp for kill enemies that way, but maybe Bungie is taking a new approach? Make vehicles primarily for traveling, and make most encounters better by hand? OR maybe for the demonstration or story, it would work better to introduce this 'unique weapon', as a talking point. It's all speculation, like everything right now. But I think they would tailor the experience to foot combat more than vehicle combat. Edit: Maybe enemies have weak spots that are better dealth with by hand? Maybe this player was experienced with these enemies and knew if she tried to splatter them, she'd die instantly? OR her vehicle would get destroyed? Like a ghost to an armour lock. Maybe not so big enemies can dodge splatters really well, like in Halo if you have a certain skull on?

3 RepliesEdited by Sordid Plebeian: 2/18/2013 6:11:52 PMThe pike might have not been armed yet. In the game you'll be able to upgrade your vehicles, so that might include weapons. Also, she could have shot them while on the pike. As for the Spider Tank, it might just be an enemy vehicle, alla scarab.

1 ReplyWell it's Bungie and they are going to play off their skillsets, so I would say I can't see the vehicles not being fun to use and as unruly to master as we did with the former vehicles they created. Looking at the concept art I would say they are going to want it to be as interesting as possible. I also say this because if micro transactions are factored here players being able to customize their personal vehicles will be a must especially if they are appealing to the Halo veterans by being integral to say a skilled driver.

3 RepliesEdited by EZ: 2/18/2013 5:33:29 PMHmm thats interesting and very well thought out.. Like someone mentioned it looks like it has some short of weapon out the nose, but Is that the "Fate of All Fools" they are talking about? Who knows, I guess time will tell. Maybe there will have a mix of transport and fighter class vehicles like on winter contingency in Reach, were you were able to drive the truck and Jorge mounted his Gun on the back. I have a feeling they will have vehicles in the more Halo sense where you can shoot and use it to run over. But again only time will tell.

3 RepliesThis is a great and well thought out piece of speculation indeed. Personally, I would love to see the something where as we progress, we are able to come across many different kinds of vehicles with different needs and strengths/weaknesses. I don't necessarily need them to be armed though, perhaps we may be able to shoot our guns (as long as they are smaller in size) while driving our vehicle? I would also love to see the implementation of party vehicles. That is, a tank or larger vehicle in which multiple people you are partied with can hop in and operate different parts of, sort of like a tank or something of the same nature. I think this would do great wonders for the fun and creativity of PvP out in the wilderness, and all around would be a fun idea.

1 ReplyIt's mentioned on the Pre-order cards of select retailers that custom vehicles will be available in Destiny. It may be possible, then, that the female character choose 'the Fate of all Fools' weapon for her pike.
