A shield is probably the most effective form of protection from melee attacks. with a regular sword, you're good to go.
Not much you can do with a trident and a small dagger.

And a net, don't forget about the net. It can be used for entangling your opponent.

Right, because I'll be able to use that effectivle while fumbling with my trident. The net is an incredibly unreliable variable. It's useless if you miss, and if you miss, that's it for you really as you're completely left in the open. Even if you do hit him, there is no garauntee that you'll even remotely tangle him. What are you going to do with the trident once he gets close? Attempt to draw your dagger? I doubt it. You'd want to limit the variables to your skill and not to the equipment in this scenario.

Actually no, in history, nets and tridents were the Gladiator version of a noob combo. They nets were weighted, and thus could be used in a whip-like manner to entangle his sword. All you need to do is neutralize the sword, or hell, his legs, and he's down. Going up an experienced Gladiator who specializes in CQC and you think your shield will be useful? He can knock it away and rip it off with ease. The trident can grab his sword as well. Although the weapon I'd personally want (well, besides a gun), would be a poleax.

Perhaps, but you can keep him at bay with the long reach of the trident while you pull the net back.

Use one arm to throw the net over him, use the other to keep the Trident pointed at him if he gets to close.
