What’s the deal there - he’s dead - I get it. But could he truly “speak” w the traveller or whatever? Was he a fraud? Is he inlets to the political system of the last city? Why not a new Speaker? Can anyone give me some context to why he mattered so much in D1?

I believe that their used to be other Speakers, and that he was the last one. He had dreams, of Alpha Lupi, (a.k.a. the Traveller.) The Traveller never actually spoke to him, but he believed in it, and spoke for it. The Ghosts also cared a lot about him. Read the Constellations lore book, has info on him. -
7 RepliesEdited by Architect_Mind: 3/28/2022 3:07:25 AMHe would interpret dreams, built a mask so he could "hear" it more clearly. In the end I think he said, "I speak for the traveler, not that it spoke to me"...so, someone could just don a mask, say stuff vaguely about good and evil, and how blah blah blah we are against the dark side so sayeth the traveler, build a following maybe have some ghosts floating around... Nah, I wish I could tell everyone what's going on, but guarantee a) no one would believe me, b) they would want so much proof that was already given to them...c) it's understanding/solving a paradox (and that was just a literal brain fart moment, that was given back in CoO, and been developing since...explaining it without interfering is hard). Here's a nugget, an echo, cold steel, then nothing..."lost"...across a multilayered meshed timeline set on a loop.

His mask allowed him to get vague dreams that required interpretation. Prior, there were people born with a natural affinity for “hearing” the Traveler. The Speaker was the de facto leader of the City. He mattered because he “spoke” for the Traveler. The machine god who gifted Humanity with Light which saved them extinction by the Darkness. Prophet to a silent god, a god people believed in because they saw its miracles daily. There may be a new one coming. It was hinted at but who knows. Crow being spoken to gave some people the idea but now with his memories back, who knows where he’ll end up.

9 RepliesHe would 'listen' to the Traveler and could understand pieces of what it said. He could never talk to it and the traveler could never directly speak to him. The speakers mask (which now resides in zavala's office) could listen to the travelers thoughts. There were speakers before him that would tell of prophecies good or bad that would sometimes come true or not. The city stopped listening to the speaker of what he had to say since it would usually not come true or meant nothing. The speaker did however hear of the coming red war from the traveler and did nothing of it. I think this 95% accurate, but if you have any questions look in destinypedia.com

He was a Snake Oil Salesman/Politician.

The traveler speaks to some people through dreams. These people would eventually become the speakers, but over time this would grow weaker and fewer people would get this ability. The last speaker was a bit of a fraud, as mentioned in the red war. That being said they did play a big roll in giving hope to the people. There is some lore that suggests that there are perspective speakers out there. Micha is one example. Realistically though, this is probably a story thread that bungie just didn't want to finish so they ended with the red war.
