“Gamers have no idea what they want, but they know what they like” —-developer giving lecture at GDC. Developers are not servants, and they do not owe gamers a personalized experience. We are not paying for that level of service.

  • no but they owe an experience to the community. They ask us what we want and what they can fix to make it a better community. If they are going to say they are gonna do something they need to do it or stop taking our money. And yes developers are servants to the company paying them to make the game. Your reply literally has nothing to do with the topic and will be reported as spam.

  • And that experience isn’t going to appeal to everyone. The problem is that players who don’t like that experience are unwilling to simply move on to other games. They instead insist that Bungie remake the entire franchise to their personal preferences. That’s not going to happen, and demanding it is a recipe for unhappiness. Avoidable. Unhappiness.

  • Therein lies the conundrum. If theyre that flaky to begin with their two cents is less valuable compared to dedicated players.

  • It not personal preferences when a F*CKING LOT of the players want it. Haven't been able to get the osteo catalyst because I can't get any ascendant alloy anywhere. That's not my preference that's lack of character and professionalism from Bungie. So much for not wanting"half-baked" stuff. FFS

  • It is when what is being asked for is detrimental to the experience that the developers are trying to create, or is outside the norms of the KIND of game that it is. THAT was the point that the developer I quoted was making in the lectures. You don't put an EASY mode in a Soulsborne game simply because you have a lot of angry, frustrated reviewers who are crying that they can't get through the game in time to meet their deadlines. You don't put random MM in raids simply because you have an angry minority of players who don't want to put in the time or effort to find a raid team. In both cases, what is being asked for DETRACTS from the overall experience. The lecturer's point---to other developers---was that this is where the devs have to step in with a clear vision of what kind of experience they want to make, and STICK BY IT. Because not everyone is going to like it. But the point ISN"T to make a game that everyone likes. It isn't possible...and it isn't good business. Because you'll wind up with a game that no one really likes.

  • I beg to differ. Ive seen some really good constructive criticism about what players want but its often drowned in a sea of toxic anger.

  • True. But its that sea of toxic anger that the dev I was quoting was referring to....and the need to either tune it out, or intelligently sift through it to find the rare gems you are pointing out.
