If I was writing the ending for the Destiny series, I would have the guardian go inside the traveler and destroy it. The traveler is not capable of self sacrifice and needs the guardian to end it. With the traveler's death the timeline resets.
The cut scene would be of the three astronauts on Mars. Instead of the rain and seeing the traveler, the astronauts report they lost the signal and it's just Mars.

Ya know what would be cool/messed up? If you destroy the traveler, and then you’re transported to this other dimension temporarily. Ya get dialogue from all of your fallen comrades, from the traveler itself, and then your ghost. Suddenly, the screen goes white, and then- BOOM. You open your eyes and you’re back at the cosmodrome, with your ghost repeating the same FIRST words to you that you ever hear in the series, and then the screen cuts to black. #DESTINY 1 REMASTERED. Although that would be a big all of the destiny fans that look forward to a black and white ending.

Somehow we end up seeing those 3 astronauts before the endgame credits roll! Sounds like something right out of Star Trek!

Yeah they should really pull some trek elements honestly, make the Vex or hive actually frightening like the Borg but alas that silly Teen rating restrains them. Somewhat.

The Hive have always reminded me of the Flood from Halo. From the first moon mission when the guardian awoke the Hive with all the Thralls rushing to overwhelm the guardian reminded me of the 343 Guilty Spark mission. I haven't noticed in it Destiny 2, but in Destiny the Hive 'barnacles' with the 'hairs' were really creepy.
