The vault was basically a vex throne world with Atheon being the ascendant creature. Rather than being able to hold physical control of it, they held control of the time within it.

I went on a crazy ramble on the last poor soul. This is going to sound odd, but can you try coming at me with a bit more physics? The perception of time is an illusion. Time exists as an axis by which we measure change. Axis is just another way of saying dimension here. The concept of a throne world is that of a pocket dimension as far as I understand: an infinite space that exist as a singular point. Anchoring the dimension to a time axis allows an infinite space of matter to be formed within that point in time in a way that is already immune to change along that axis, so there's no need to control time since it's a constant at that point. With that said, how can he create space if he can only manipulate the passage of time within it? It'd be like trying to make a ruler out of inches. That's great, but where's the material to make the ruler independent from the table?
Stop writing numbers on my table.
