• It's a pillar of the Shambali religion, potentially an incarnation of God.

 • His cells are decaying and regenerating at an increased rate. Do you want to know his whole backstory?

 • It is. Here, I'll paste my reply from earlier.
Before the Omnic Crisis, there was a largely classified but widely acknowledged United States "Soldier Enhancement Program". It would give US Soldiers who participated superhuman strength, speed, and agility. Gabriel Reyes was one such soldier. Hailing from Los Angeles (I believe), he joined the military planning to be a career soldier and quickly made friends with fellow enhanced soldier Jack Morrison. When the first Omnic Crisis arose, Gabriel and Jack were chosen for a strike to lead asymmetrical warfare against the robots, the original incarnation of Overwatch. Gabriel was the leader of this strike team. When Overwatch was successful and the Omnics were defeated, Jack Morrison was promoted to the head of the new Overwatch organization, and Ana Amari was promoted to his second in command, with Reyes being completely ignored in the process. This would create a rift between the three. Reyes was put in charge of Overwatch's black ops unit, Blackwatch. During Overwatch's final years, Blackwatch was put under investigation for basically abusing their ability to perform any secret mission they wanted and ignoring all red tape (allegations of murder, torture, weapons proliferation, blackmail, etc). Things came to a head when the Swiss Overwatch Headquarters blew up, due to a confrontation between Reyes and Morrison. Both men were declared dead and Overwatch was disbanded. Years later, Reaper surfaced. He employs the same tactics as Gabriel, yet he uses his prowess to align with criminal organizations and cross off surviving Overwatch members. The list gets shorter every day thanks to Reaper. It is widely thought that his cells are rapidly decaying and repairing themselves at an accelerated rate, effectively making him undead.
