Not bad.
Bit disappointed with the narrative angle, though. In the first game, there was no good guys vs. bad guys, simply two sides to play as. Now we have this 'guvmint's screwin' us over, let's kill 'em' mentality. And whilst I side with that in theory, it's overplayed beyond belief in fictional settings.

Edited by A Jackal Sniper: 9/30/2016 1:10:52 PMThere were definitely good guys vs. bad guys in the first game. You just get to play as the bad guys, the IMC. It's pretty apparent even from what little was in that campaign, there's a level where they send out robots to mow down civilians indiscriminately.
-
If you're on the Militia side you can hear that the rebels fired on the IMC first. They didn't want to be found.
-
If they didn't want to be found, Why'd they send out a distress call saying "we are under attack by IMC forces?"
-
Remember how they weren't on any map? My guess is that they didn't like either government. The IMC found them and when the IMC started searching their homes one of their guys fired on the IMC. The IMC was like "They're hiding the Militia!" and the rest is history.
-
Do they say this in game? I can't remember this at all.
-
Before the mission starts on the Militia side, you get to hear a recorded message by the colonists. The guy speaking sounds worried but there aren't any shots. Then you hear some shots (close to the mic) before there are a whole bunch of shots (farther away).
-
That would make sense, but on the IMC side, Blisk talks about how the colonists they found are perfect test subjects for the specters. Also, he says "we are under attack" meaning the IMC more than likely started first. Additionally, Macallan says "They followed you, and found us instead! Those are civilians getting slaughtered!" Meaning the IMC attacked first.
-
They found the perfect test subjects, Militia Conspirators. They're getting slaughtered because they fired on them. A guy who wrote a canon Titanfall book agrees with this theory
-
Well they were affiliated with Macallan, but they didn't know that yet. But anyways, you agree with me that the first game outlines that the IMC are bad right?
-
Yes, but I wouldn't say the Militia is good. They attack Angel City, which (even if it wasn't intended) probably got people killed, ruined businesses, and destroyed homes. They completely destroy Demeter, separating families by a galaxy, and probably killing any civilians still on the surface.

Edited by A Jackal Sniper: 9/30/2016 4:53:55 PMI meant in portrayal, not in terms of the overall lore. You raise interesting points though, I didn't know or consider a bunch of this stuff
-
Oh dear. Yeah, it's not something they made very obvious through multiplayer matches.
-
Edited by A Jackal Sniper: 9/30/2016 1:27:20 PMI mean if it was in the middle of the match I'd understand. But they mention these things in the openings of a bunch of the levels, before the match even starts. The IMC were the obvious bad guys. A multiplayer campaign was a terrible idea, and an awful way to present the story. I didn't even understand what was going on fully until I played it multiple times. But there was a story there, no matter how much people like to pretend there wasn't.

I hear that. I think the setting and style are enough to carry the overall narrative. Hopefully the characters this time around are entertaining as well.
-
I mean, stylistically... I wouldn't call it unique, but it's certainly enjoyable, so they have that. I couldn't tell you anything about the characters of the first game. I only remember Blisk because it was a friend of mine's Gamertag. Plus Sith Ifricin. Sorry.

I don't think the whole gritty sci go thing is used enough these days (we see plenty of sci fi, but it's all color and brightness). The characters in the first game were pretty one dimensional, so my hope is that they've improved this time around, which is highly likely given that they have a whole single player mode to dedicate to them.
I don't think the whole gritty sci go thing is used enough these days (we see plenty of sci fi, but it's all color and brightness).
Well, you're probably right there. I mean, my memory may just be stretching back a bit far, but we've got Dead Space and Fallout for a start, and Gears. The Martain sections of Doom, certainly. Arguably Deus Ex, though it straddles a very bifurcated line there. Lots of films too, Elysium and District 9... Hmm. I'm glad there's lots more colour in games now than there was 5-10 years ago, though. Games to me are about escapism and fantasy and fun, more than grit and realism and grounding. So yes, many games these days are much more vibrant in their aesthetic: Sunset Overdrive, Destiny, Overwatch, Battleborn, Halo, Gigantic, no doubt many more. Thing is, Titanfall is one of those games that's all about immersion, and I think the grittiness adds to that.

The IMC is not the government. They founded the Frontier colonies and later abandoned them during the Titan Wars (War in the Core Systems). After the war they came back, saw how much money and power the frontier could get them and started to invade the colonies. In response the Militia was formed to stop them and the rest is in the game.

I see. So it's even more hipster because they're not fighting elected officials, simply successful businessmen. Also, is this backstory in the game(s)?
