After going back and having played all three I'd say ME2 was the worst. It was such a waste of potential.
I also subscribe to the argument that ME3 is the worst due to the final level and ending in addition to reprehensible Day 1 DLC.
In some respects Mass Effect is the most flawed and also the best. If Bioware fully realized the first ME rather than taking things in a sharp alternate direction things would be much better. I notice lots of people over sensationalizing the quality of Mass Effect in general. When you really stop and think about it these aren't ground breaking games in the slightest.

Individually these games were no where near the best. But when you put them together, they become one of the best franchises in history. That's part of their uniqueness.
-
That depends on how broad you'd consider "the best franchises in history" to be.
-
I have it positioned in the top three.

What's your top three? This should be good.

I don't know if I could nail down what the three best franchises in video game are. That's a tough one. I could certainly list many franchises better than Mass Effect. To put that in the Top 3 is absurd. I don't think you could put it in the Top 3 of the 360/PS3/Wii generation. If you want me to list franchises better than Mass Effect than sure. Half-Life, Super Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Grand Theft Auto, Metal Gear Solid, Diablo, Warcraft, Portal, Street Fighter, Halo, Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, Knights of the Old Republic, Starcraft, The Witcher, Resident Evil, The Sims. You want to talk "Top 50" then yeah okay but Top 3? Of all time? Ehhh. Was Mass Effect the first series of games you ever played or something?

No, I actually started playing Mass Effect only around a year ago. I disagree with Half Life; Mario, Zelda, and Metroid carry little more than nostalgia; Gand Theft Auto is good at cultural criticism and wow factor but little else. Metal Gear is a very niche one that I can't talk about; Diablo isn't as good; Warcraft is more of a cult classic deal; Portal wasn't that great; Street Fighter, like all fighting games not named Super Smash Bros, is boring to the point of tedium. Halo really isn't anymore; Fallout really isn't; Elder Scrolls is boring as hell; Knights I will give you, Star Craft I won't (and I played religiously for nearly two years); Witcher isn't; Resident Evil has been garbage for several iterations now, and the Sims isn't better. Opinions will definitely vary, but I strongly disagree with most of your list. The majority of them really aren't great games, they just do one or two things in a way other games won't and get lauded for it. Grand Theft Auto, like I said, is good at being a cultural taboo. The gameplay is boring as shit, and GTA V's Online isn't great fun thing so much as a time waster. Elder Scrolls will forever be one of gaming' most overrated franchises. Sure, we have nice big worlds filled with things to do, but why bother? When did they ever give a reason to go explore that cave, or climb that mountain other than for the simple fact of it's there. Sure, they're all good games, but I'd rate Borderlands over 75% of them in a heartbeat. Or even Forza (though I will be the first to admit Racing is as much a nice as fighters, and most would disagree with me on it).

I could write a lengthy reply on all that's faulty with that you're saying but there's no point. You can't be reasoned with. I can list games regarded as being up there as the best of all time and you'll respond with "No it's not" or "That's just nostalgia" or "This hugely popular and beloved game is boring because some reason I'll make up" So yeah. It's cool that you like ME. I like it a lot too. But it's kinda tough for people to shoot the shit with you about video games if you have such an extreme view on things.

Really though, what is great about Mario? It's not a good game anymore. At the time of release, it was amazing. Nothing else was like it. Nowadays though it's not a special game anymore. Games change over time, so do the rankings.

How so? They revolutionized choices in games and the combat was also good and packed with variety

Edited by Vgnut: 7/25/2015 1:20:58 AM
They revolutionized choices in games
Seriously? How do you figure that? Because you could carry saved files over? CDPR was doing that with The Witcher at the same time Bioware was with Mass Effect. How well did Bioware actually handle carrying over those choices into the next game? Based on the ME3 end game Bioware ended up being all talk and unable to walk the walk. You can't mean that they revolutionized choices in games with the choices they proposed to the player. That's far from a new concept to video games. It's not even new for Bioware. If anything choices in Mass Effect are more constrained than they once were. But that's not so much Bioware's fault as a changing industry landscape. I'll say what Mass Effect has really changed is the dialogue system in games today.
