I think large companies such as Bungie (any many others) jumping on the "lets help Nepal" bandwagon is disgusting. If you want to help, then go help...marketing and merchandise is not to admirable IMO

I agree that you should just donate to Red Cross, but I'm looking at it as people who would never donate are a least giving something. Even though it might be as little as 2-3 bucks, its better than 0.
-
Well....... maybe it gets people giving SOMETHING. Hopefully they research a little and decide to give money and not buy some garbage and have ~ 15% of their money go to the actual assistance of these poor folks. The OP was kind enough to post up some links that i put up. My suggestion for this particular event: Red Cross. 92% of donations actually go to work. They have ~5% overhead. Very very low. Keep that in mind. Bungie? Cool they are doing it but there are a hundred better ways to help others.

Edited by Judge_Rhymehold: 5/1/2015 1:59:30 PMBut it gets people who wouldn't ordinarily donate, donating. Edit: sorry just saw someone else said this.
-
Possibly yes. When i got up this morning to all these threads and articles about the T-Shirts and Shaders, shortly followed by the complaints about shaders (totally unnecessary IMO) It all felt a little too corporate to pull at my heartstrings.
-
i agree , i hate how some companies are leeching on other peoples misfortune like that :(
-
Yes. They're leeching off of misfortune... by donating.
-
they arent , we are supposed to pay while they get the credit and PR = leechig they sould donate a part of their 500M destiny budget , not sell overpriced shaders
-
they arent , we are supposed to pay while they get the credit and PR = leechig
Well defended, spot on IMO

Edited by SnowBodhi: 5/1/2015 2:44:09 PMWhat this does is generate extra funds from people who wouldn't normally donate, and from people who say that others should just donate without needing personal motivation or merchandise, but don't ACTUALLY donate themselves. This doesn't stop people donating seperately and raises awareness to people who may not take an interest in the news. It can therefore only be a good thing.
-
If you're buying a product you're not donating IMO, you're buying something...in this case, the false sense of moral do goodery that came with a T-Shirt and Shader. You're not making a donation, and then getting a token merchandise thank you (which should be more than enough to coax a donation from the hardest of hearts) I don't think many people are like that, and most people I know would rather just help people for the sake of helping. I prefer to give my money and time to charities in my local area, or ones where I can see the benefit. Call me selfish if you will. I do accept your point about getting people to donate who would not normally, it's saddens me they would not normally donate though, ya feels?
-
It saddens me that they don't donate too, but I'm very much a pragmatist. $1 of profit from X number of people who wouldn't normally donate, plus normal donations, is better than pure donations from the small few. Yes, everyone should be perfect, but they just aren't and we aren't going to change that here. I could donate all day about the problems of only supporting local charities, but this is neither the time nor the place.
-
Yes, everyone should be perfect, but they just aren't and we aren't going to change that here.
You're right, I don't know what I was thinking - I'm a cynical idealist.

Bless you for trying mate

This ^^^^^ I salute thee, Guardian.

Edited by BenjyX55: 5/1/2015 1:38:39 PMHow dare they try to help!

Are you asking How does Bungie help? Or using internet speak to ask How do I/you help?
-
How dare they try to help!
I'm mocking you.
-
Your doing it wrong. You've since edited your original dribble.
-
It would say so if I did.

Never a more sensible comment typed.......
-
It doesn't say edited above my comment.
-
ok.....there is potential that I mis-read your comment. Thanks for you input however.
-
I will help anyway, but what's wrong with generating extra attention (commercial or not)?
-
It has its own self interest as the primary...sickening. The point you originally made hit the nail on the head for me. I have not looked into the aid organizations in a while now, but I'd be interested to see the % of money gained (not profit) from these sales that is going to a worthwhile charity (if there are such things anymore)
I rather donate the whole amount to an aid organisation so all of that money gets to go to Nepal (or at least most of it).
< Nails and Heads.
