It's hilarious that Destiny and it's community struggle with in-game trading when there are dozens of MMORPGS that have well established and thriving in-game economies. Why do people still cling to the idea that such a thing wouldn't work for destiny? A trading/auction/marketplace system is the only thing that makes a RNG loot system viable. Destiny's loot system is "broken" because it was originally SUPPOSED to have trading built in.

If you look at most MMOs, the trading system is there to mainly support a crafting system. "High-end" crafted objects are the real moneymakers (and even so, most games do not let crafted items be the absolute best--raid items are what are best in slot). Mats can sometimes be a big item in markets, but then again, this is usually to support the crafting of items that need those in higher quantity than a crafter could gather on their own. Second, in most MMOs, "special items"--those that drop as a "dungeon" (aka, strike) reward or bought from vendors using "special" money are typically "bind on pickup"--meaning that things you get there cannot be traded to other players in any way. Translating the above into Destiry, I would say that even if an MMO-like trading system were in place, Exotics would NOT be tradable. And what do people want to trade? Exotics.... Some games allow limited trading of these items between members of a fireteam at the end of a raid/strike, so that would not be outside the realm of possibility. Finally, if you go look at most MMOs, the biggest issue the community generally has is RMT--real money trading. Mostly, these are "gold trading sites" where you can go buy a million credits for real $$$. If you allow trading, it's almost impossible to shut down this kind of activity. Games drop the ban hammer on accounts they catch doing this all the time, and yet it continues because there's a big market in it. If people get upset at Exotics being sold by Xur, imagine the cry if people could buy them by spending real money in some way.

  • I would say some of the alternate versions of legendaries would be worth more than exotics, I would give a gjelly, sorus, thunderlord, and a hard light for a vanquisher with field scout.

  • So but I have to disagree with the statement that most people want to trade exotics. I would strongly say most people want to be able to trade for shards to get their character to a higher level to participate in raids with their friends and in most cases they aren't able to because the rng system only gives them a ton of energy and no shards. I was in that boat for a while to however one thing I appreciate bungie doing is the ability to trade energy for shards via Eris. I think if they keep emplacing in game mechanics like this to give players more control over their progression then a trading system wouldn't be necessary. However "grinding" would still be necessary to get to this point of control.

OK, fair enough. But as soon as you open this up, you'd see sites on the net: 6 shards for $1 !!!! Frankly, the correct solution to this to make ascendant shards universal, just like exotic shards. I guess I can see why someone might have designed it the way it is now, but I can't really see much of a downside to making them universal.

  • True, making shards and energies available through speaker, xur, and factions for strange coins/motes of lights/marks/commendations. Give things that progressively lose worth such as those worth having for the long run.

  • I think the loot system is built around a non-trading economy. Xur is an example of easing no trading. I'm fine with no trading.

  • And all trading economies suffer from duping. Destiny doesn't have a diverse enough set of armor/weapons to survive the torrent of duping.
